they have no desire to meet if the US wants them to give up the nuclear program.

At least that is what DUers who live in other countries have written and people I know who travel a lot have told me. When I was in France in 2005 during Bush I thought they would feel that way but I was surprised to find that they were very cool and have a broad perspective. Their attitude was "Governments and leaders come and go, things will swing in the other direction eventually". And this was despite the whole Freedom Fries BS that Bush proclaimed for the W House cafeteria (instead of French Fries).
I am in crappy health so the moron better see his demise pretty soon since I would love to be able to die with an ear to ear smile on my face and know that my country isn't doomed.

(24,324 posts)outsude the USA are artistic, thinking creative, types.
I have several Russian friends, all well-educated.
One of them occasionally reminds me about how much a role America has played and continues to play in the problems of the world. That is a VERY simplified statement from me. But he does have very good perceptions about things. He is very aware of world events, is something of a historian.
I remember over a year ago.. maybe 18 months, he was very clear that the problem was not so much what the Russians did to the US election, but that the US was vulnerable, for many reasons, to what the Russians did - cyber weakness, social ignorance, right-wing stradegery since the late 1970s, racism, etc etc..
We don;t always agree on everything but he is always enlightening to discuss things with.
PS - He is also a sailor and a GREAT cook , Lives in St Petersburg.. one of my favorite cities in the world..

(51,584 posts)ate more knowledgeable about other countries' geography,,history, politics, languages, religion, etc. Maybe we are still isolationists due to our geography or perhaps we are too egocentric as our status has made us feel superior to the rest of the world since WW2. Do we not care? Why not be concerned and interested about the whole world and not just about our own issues? Our citizens seem so ignorant about other countries sometimes. With globalization I think our attitude needs to change. Many Americans, especially trump voters, don't want to open their eyes and look at our place in the world.
