By BOB KINZEL 51 MINUTES AGO
Sen. Bernie Sanders says he'll formally announce his re-election plans next week and says he has more to accomplish as a U.S. senator.
Campaign volunteers are in the process of collecting enough petition signatures to put him on the ballot in November as an independent candidate.
"I think we'll have something to say early next week, maybe Monday and what I'll have to say I don't think will be a great surprise to anybody in the state of Vermont," Sanders told VPR on Thursday. "I am very proud to have represented Vermont for two terms in the U.S. Senate. I think we've accomplished a lot. Obviously there's a lot more that has to be done, and we look forward to doing it."
At this time, no Republican candidates have announced their intention to run for Sanders' Senate seat. However several independent candidates will be running.

(31,261 posts)I would love to see his announcement be that he plans to serve out a full Senate term if re-elected and don't plan to run for President again, but that is hoping for too much, I guess.

(18,402 posts)Because he has nothing new to say ever. Hes actually been saying the same 3 or 4 things since 1972 oligarchy, 1%, rigged system, Wall Street. Hasnt done anything, just keeps repeating the mantra.
His presence in a Democratic primary will have no other function than being destructive, because each new generation of voters will think theyre hearing something new or promising and yet he cant win a primaryhe doesnt have support in communities of color. His supporters will then mostly turn against the eventual nominee or stay home in the general. 2016 redux.
Im with youdo us a favor and retire to your lake house, Mr. Sanders.

(9,527 posts)Wins pretty handily.
But even if he lost an election so did losers like Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson.
By contrast, the first time Donald Trump actually made it to election day, he won.

Fortunately this announcement is about Bernies re-election as Senator for Vermont. Obviously he does a good job for the state, they keep re-electing him. That would be hard for weaver to screw up.

(2,328 posts)He ran for the Democratic nomination for president.
He did not run for president on the Democratic ticket, Hillary Clinton did.

(53,774 posts)He just didn't get out of the primaries with the nomination.
Thankfully there will be new, younger candidates running who are actually Democrats.
