bluffs are when you try something that's a lie or at least an exaggeration, but it's hopefully believable and you get away with it; but you can't back up, so you have to pay a price for if you get called out.

donnie's lies are not believable to begin with, and he doesn't really rely on people believing them. instead, he relies on thug tactics to go along with it and let him get away with it even when the lie is exposed.

in truth, the lies are loyalty tests. they work well precisely because they're obvious lies. that way, if you repeat the lie, he knows you're on his side.
