(65,042 posts)A star football player and celebrity offering to pay for the funerals is increasing the attention, after the fact.
This is not sweeping anything under the rug. Sheesh, if Watt wanted that, he would have done nothing. And, nobody could fault him for doing nothing, because he doesn't owe those families the cost of the funerals. He's doing a fine thing and keeping the issue out front.
Don't get your response on this issue.

(37,428 posts)One thing that this star football player is doing is making funeral arrangements a lot easier on the families, preventing any economic hardship in planning for burials. That's one sort of story we won't see as a result.
We can hope that the player's stardom really does bring more attention to the matter at hand, whether or not that's enough to move any legislatures to action. What I haven't found, yet, is any follow-up by the football player on pushing elected representatives to help prevent future tragedies.
I don't suspect a sinister motive on his part. Sure, let's make it easier on the victims' families...but I also see the deed making it just the tiniest bit easier on the GOP.

(65,042 posts)I disagree, but in an agreeable sort of way. In this case, i really don't care about the GOP. He's doing a kind thing and the families' lives are a tad less horrible this week.

(82,383 posts)Why pick this charitable act in particular? Is it to protest easily available guns? Or to make it easier on those people whose children are sacrifices to the guns? Seems likely to be the former, as it would be tough to justify the latter.
