including hunting rifles. People who want to hunt could have their guns stored in a hunting facility under lock and key, available to them on presenting photo ID and during hunting season. People who want to target shoot could have their guns stored at a shooting range, under lock and key, available to them on presenting photo ID and any time they wanted to target shoot. The guns would have to be returned after use to the locked facility. No one would be allowed to have guns at home for any reason, no matter how securely they were kept. Cops could have guns, but of low caliber. People who want to shoot people can join the armed forces.

In this scenario we have to disarm most police also.

(32 posts)But an attempt to confiscate firearms would almost assuredly result in the destruction of USG and the deaths of tens of millions of Americans or more. At best the military would perform a coup to avoid bloodshed and promise not to confiscate civilian weapons.
Civilian firearms are out of the bag and not going back in. Best idea Ive heard yet is owner liability laws to hold owners accountable for children/criminals taking weapons and hurting/killing others with them.

(36,745 posts)Ammunition control.
A gun is useless without ammunition.
Limit it to licensed purchases only, with limits on amounts that can be purchased. Also make those who reload their own a special license and sale of those reloads a felony. Also make resale of existing ammunition without a license a felony. All sales of ammunition would be required to be between license holders only.
This regulation along with a ban on all semi-automatic weapons would just about do it.

(53,061 posts)Required to serve in the army and afterwards remain in the reserves which meant that the were required to keep a gun at home.
Their ammunition was kept in a sealed packet and once a year they had to go to the police station and show that they hadn't used any ammunition.
This was 30 years ago so I don't know what the current procedure is.
Nothing like this could ever be implemented in the US though.

(54,770 posts)Bet a lot of Democrats would oppose total confiscation, or at least be afraid to suggest it at this point.
But, there is no reason we can't have registration, limits on number and types of guns (tough restrictions on semi-automatics, magazine capacity, for instance), almost total restrictions on public toting, things like digital locks and even transponders to make it easy to spot violators, etc.
What viable candidate is going to propose confiscation of all guns? None that I know of. Hopefully that will change, but not anytime soon. There are far too many white wingers -- even ones that don't own guns or tote -- who support loose restrictions.

(31,011 posts)Take the weapon, go home and kill her...possibly more, too.
This does not solve the problem.
Lax gun laws and letting the wrong people have them is a big part of the problem.
He will stangler her, pick up the bedside lamp and hit her head repeatedly, pull the knife out of his pocket and cut her throat....banning guns/ammo will not stop domestic violence/murder.
But the last part of your statement I agree with 100% 1 conviction for anything violent - assault, domestic abuse, cruelty to an animal - you lose your right to own a gun. Keep your nose clean and have your case reviewed in 5 years. Screw up twice - go to prison.

(31,011 posts)I should have said that anyway.
Weapon confiscation is unrealistic, especially in this country. We need stronger gun laws. Yes, last paragraph...I agree a 1000%.

(39,343 posts)ok, you can come get em. This has gotten too insane. All I ask is that we develop some kind of phaser set on stun that we get to use in the rare event that someone tries to break into our home.
Said new phasers would not be as lethal as tasers that cops are able to kill with now.
But back to the OP, yeah, you can have my guns now. We shown that we as a people can't keep em anymore. Until then, they are locked up in a safe and separated from ammunition, except for my work gun which is locked up elsewhere.
