'Nasty' sounds a bit understated.

wow! Just amazing! Too bad it couldn't just be harmless steam that's formed because it's beautiful.

I was there 15 years ago, and the National Park Service had a path that led to a ridge from which one could watch the lava flow into the ocean. To get there, you were required to bring three liters of water and leather-soled shoes. It was a pitch-black moonless night, though with more stars visible than anywhere else I've ever been. I know why they have an observatory on the Big Island. We had to walk a 90 minute obstacle course around the lava formations to get to the ridge, but the view, several hundred feet above sea level, was better that a 1968 light show. Vast curtains of brilliantly colored steam were rising up from the ocean. There was a slight whiff of sulfur in the air, but we were fairly far away from the steam and the smoke. Below us was a slow-moving carpet of lava lazily making its way to the coastline, ensuring that the show would continue without interruption.

The other one is "vog".

Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vog

(snip)

Vog is a form of air pollution that results when sulfur dioxide and other gases and particles emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic", "smog", and "fog". The term is in common use in the Hawaiian islands, where the Kīlauea volcano, on the Island of Hawaiʻi (aka "The Big Island" ), has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983. Based on June 2008 measurements, Kīlauea emits 2,000–4,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) every day.

And there was a thick Vog then. I came back to NYC with a pretty bad cough. (I have mild asthma, which is activated by irritants in the air. I live in NYC and don't have too many problems here, so that can tell you how bad the Vog can get.)

I can only imagine how bad it will be there now for people with lung issues and Asthma.

(We were considering a trip there again soonish, but will probably postpone for the foreseeable future. The Big Island, however, is one of my absolute favorite destinations. It's pretty much going to a living and growing island in its infancy. Geologically its super exciting. And the resorts are beautiful.)
