Hashtags. Tweets. Speeches. A book foreword.
Friends and family of former national security adviser Michael Flynn are waging a campaign to try to exonerate the retired lieutenant general and, possibly, land him a presidential pardon.
The push comes as Flynn himself who in December pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak is also trying to rehabilitate his public image, including appearing with a long-shot Republican House candidate, delivering a private foreign policy speech in Manhattan and writing the foreword to a friends self-published manifesto supporting President Trump.
But the largely social-media-based effort has, at times, put Flynns advocates, and occasionally Flynn, at odds with his own legal team, which believes that any public attention to Flynns case is not helpful as he awaits sentencing and has counseled that he and his family to remain quiet.
In December, for instance, one of Flynns brothers, Joseph Flynn, posted a tweet urging the president to pardon his former adviser. About time you pardoned General Flynn who has taken the biggest fall for all of you given the illegitimacy of this confessed crime in the wake of all this corruption, he wrote.
But the missive raised concerns among Flynns legal team at Covington & Burling where Flynns lawyer, Robert Kelner works and shortly thereafter Joseph Flynn deleted the tweet and replaced it with a more respectful plea on his brothers behalf.

(21,995 posts)He pleaded guilty to one charge of lying to the FBI. In fact, Robert Mueller had many more charges against Flynn and he accepted Flynn's plea for the information and probably his future testimony. Mr. Mueller also had numerous charges against Flynn's son and it appears that those were dropped as part of the plea deal. I recall at least one news report that indicated that both Flynns could face the death penalty for their treason. Reportedly, the father broke down in tears.
No doubt, Mr. Mueller has held onto those charges (sealed indictments?) in order to maintain Flynn's cooperation in the ongoing investigations.
At some point, I hope all of the information that Mr. Mueller is assembling will be made public so Americans can see how deep and broad the corruption of Trump and the GOP goes.
