(131,223 posts)NK has always played these games, but obviously Spanky thought they wouldn't mess with him, since he's the Great Negotiator. Surprise, Charlie Brown; Lucy pulled the football away again.

(56,261 posts)back in the days of u.s.-soviet nuclear treaty talks, there was always this huge sort of dance leading up to the negotiations.
always arguments over the height and shape of the table, the temperature of the room, the height and distance apart of the podiums for the press conference after, all sorts of little things like that.
the talks would be suspended for months and then back on and so on over seemingly tiny matters like this.
but there's a point to this silly dance. each side is testing the other, putting on their game face and seeing how the other side negotiates. if handled poorly, one side may tip their hand and signal weakness or desperation. talks can be doomed by being overly insistent on a small point like the height of the table, but talks can also be doomed by being overly compliant to the other side's demands, as this may make them unwilling to compromise later, wrongly thinking you'll eventually cave.
the only real difference is north korea is known for making far more brazen and outrageous demands as part of their dance.
i'm sure donnie has done this sort of thing himself as a businessperson. it's just that he's so used to being able to bully everyone else, he doesn't know how to deal with other people who know how to dance as well.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
