Trump has run out of options, so he will force the hands of the DOJ & the FBI. The fallout will not be good for the country, especially with his cronies in charge of the house and senate.

(33,310 posts)The POTUS has enormous power, and Trump's been good at exposing how much our government relies on unwritten rules by ignoring them, flouting them, and then daring someone to do something about it.
He's a bully, and he got handed a giant club when he was sworn in. I don't see that anyone has actually stood up and punched him in the nose yet. Mueller's powder is pretty dry, comparatively.
He fired Comey, and he got away with it (so far). He ruined McCabe's career, and he got away with it (so far). He's insulted nearly everyone on the planet but his cronies and his voters, and he's got away with it (so far). He hides from any press interactions that aren't weighted towards him. The MSM still won't call him a liar. NPR bends over backwards to normalize him. He has the entire RW Mediascape at his beck and call.
I'd say we're on a knife edge at this moment. One side is the vaunted "Rule of Law", and the other is an Autocratic Kakistocracy. So far, the Gaslighting has been working.

(33,310 posts)I keep thinking there's a line he'll cross, and it will become apparent that the Emperor has no clothes. But there is no depth his voters and his media won't sink to at his request.
I have little to no faith left in the somnolent American voter. Money buys propaganda, and propaganda buys their consent very effectively. The GOP has unlimited money.
30% of the voting public would shoot themselves in the foot if it would make liberals unhappy. 30% of that 30% would just like to shoot liberals.

(62,406 posts)I always point back to ford's pardon of Nixon as being the very point at which the Republican Party said to its future politicians "go ahead - do what you want. We'll save your ass any way we can."
I think that moment directly led to the abuses of Reagan, HW, Junior and are a direct antecedent of Trump today. He knows a Republican congress will do nothing.

(11,282 posts)I mean this Republican Congress is complicit, they have attacked voting rights, gerrymandered the shit out of this country, stolen a Supreme Court seat and failed to uphold their Constitutional responsibilities.
They are on the verge of destroying our Republic and willing to celebrate doing it.
