Rep. John Lewis spoke at my granddaughter's graduation ceremony last weekend...

It was so perfect. Hearing his voice, recalling his story in my mind was like a balm to my soul. When I think about his decency and his sacrifices for the cause of civil rights, it makes me happy but also sad that we have fallen so low with Trump as our president.

I think so many parents of graduating seniors felt that way, too. And it was wonderful that his presence could be a moment where we could remind this generation of people like Lewis. The grads really needed to know more about his story as well.

HRC spoke at Yale commencement. Another inspiring speaker to this generation of grads who need all the inspiration they can get to go out into the world as leaders for change.

I guess no one invited Trump to speak. F*** him.

I have heard Congressman Lewis tell his "preaching to chicken" story four times in person.

Congressman John Lewis is a national treasure

I had a grandson graduating from the same place. I got to watch Lewis because they had the ceremony streaming on the net.

I have never seen so many people at a graduation. Obviously, they had an earlier ceremony in the A.M. Ours was the College of Arts and Sciences where my granddaughter received her BA in Political Science.

We were dreading the afternoon ceremony because heavy rain and lightening was forecast. We had ponchos and umbrellas at the ready but it turned out to be a sunny day, hot in fact. We used the umbrellas for shade.

speak. She was also inspiring and considering how Trump screwed Puerto Rico over when the storm caused so much damage, she was also inspiring. She received her BA from BU.

I hope my granddaughter does something inspiring with her PolySci education. She is in Paris now, having flown out yesterday evening. It was a gift from her parents. I gave her some money and a copy of Sargent's "El Jaleo" with my essay about same which I published here on DU. My daughter is going to work on doing it over the summer (we are self publishing it). I will give my granddaughter a special signed copy.

She had wanted to be a costume designer but jobs in that field were scarce. She has been working instead in nonprofit jobs, raising money and doing PR. I will see her in October when I accompany my husband to a B'nai Brith conference.

My cousin is finishing up his sophomore year at Lehigh and this summer he is going to Germany for a month and the UK for a month to study international business. When he graduated from HS his sister saved her money and took him to UK, Spain and Italy it was so cute and so sweet.

I wish your granddaughter all the best she sounds like an amazing person that will have a ton of great opportunities to do fantastic things!

I graduated BU in 2006 with a deagree in history. I chose not to attend my graduation, moving instead to the U.K.

I’m jealous that you got to see John Lewis speak!

But here in the real world, I bet hearing Lewis was something. He's a remarkable person.
