Lesley Stahl: Trump Told Me Privately He Attacks The Media So People Won't Believe Negative Stories

by Josh Feldman | 3:33 pm, May 22nd, 2018

-snip-

Stahl spoke with PBS NewsHour‘s Judy Woodruff last night at the Deadline Club Awards Dinner to talk about journalism and the President’s relationship with the press.

At one point, Stahl reflected on her post-election interview with the President-elect and how prior to it she met with him in Trump Tower, calling Trump “exactly the same” off-camera as he is on-camera.

Trump teed off on the press in their private meeting, and Stahl said she told him, “That is getting tired. Why are you doing this?… it’s boring and it’s time to end that.” And then, Stahl said, Trump responded thusly:

“You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all so when you write negative stories about me, no one will believe you.”

“So put that in your head for a minute,” she added.

among the rich and famous that they believe they belong. They are also immune to their "group" being anywhere near guilty of any type of greed or sin. There is a Scarlett O'Hara response here somewhere as in, "Deah Lawd, how could white people weah white after Laboh Day?"

A lot of left leaning folks have probably figured out that's what he's doing by now, too, but I'll guarantee you that no one, not a single one of Trump's fans know that is his secret strategy, and even if you told them, they still would not believe it.

The irony is he's admitting to Stahl why he does it, yet Trump knows all he has to say is "fake news" and his dumb voters would go around saying "Trump didn't say that to Lesley Stahl.....she's making things up....it's fake news".

"Put that in your head for a minute." Months and months after the fact, Lesley Stahl at last deigns to let the proles in on the secret of Trump's everlasting media rantings. Instead of treating those rantings as actual, legitimate complaints perhaps it would serve the media better, and serve the American people better, if the media said it was just Trump popping off again as a way to discredit reporting he doesn't like? Or would that be too much like the magician giving away the secret to his trick?

This encounter should have been known to the public immediately. She is a correspondent on one of the highest rated and most watched shows of the past 40 years and she says nothing. His duplicity should have been exposed on 60 minutes immediately!

She did the same thing with Reagan. She interviewed him and realized he was in the throes of dementia yet said nothing for 14 years.Imagine the damage she could have prevented at the time by alerting the public that Reagan was impaired and not capable of leading. We wouldn't be dealing with the "Saint Ronny" myth we are dealing with today.

She reported on the hearing for the burglars.

Stahl's prominence grew after she covered Watergate. "I found an apartment in the Watergate complex, moved all my stuff from Boston, and didn't miss a day of work. ... June 1972. Most of the reporters in our bureau were on the road, covering the presidential campaign. Thus, I was sent out to cover the arrest of some men who had broken into one of the buildings in the Watergate complex. That CBS let me, the newest hire, hold on to Watergate as an assignment was a measure of how unimportant the story seemed: ... I was the only television reporter covering the early court appearances. When the five Watergate burglars asked for a bail reduction, I got my first scoop. Unlike my competitors, I was able to identify them. The next time the cameraman listened when I said, 'Roll! That's them!' And so CBS was the only network to get pictures of the burglars. I was a hero at the bureau." [11]

...attacking "liberal media bias" to get mainstream media to cut them some slack and shy away from hard-hitting reporting on them. Republican party chair Rich Bond said this explicitly way back in 1992.

When one team has been so successful at working the refs to edge calls in their favor, what's the next step? To undermine the refs' status as refs in the first place. Why should anyone pay attention to their calls?

Trump may have shocked you by saying it outright, but this didn't start with him, and it's successful because it's already a habit for the inFOXicated portion of our citizens.
