NFL weighs 15-yard penalties for kneeling during national anthem: report
By Brett Samuels - 05/22/18 04:41 PM EDT

NFL owners on Tuesday mulled the possibility of assessing an in-game penalty against teams whose players kneel in protest during the national anthem.

Sports Illustrated reported that NFL owners met in Atlanta and discussed how to handle anthem protests moving forward.

One suggestion was to have the home team decide whether both teams would be on the field for "The Star-Spangled Banner," or remain in their respective locker rooms. If the teams chose to come out, a team would be assessed a 15-yard penalty if any of their players protested during the anthem.

Sports journalists took to Twitter and roundly criticized the concept.

Do they want to lose ever more viewers?

What is to stop players from coming up with some other symbol/action to show their lawful opinions? Or if both teams have agreed to have at least one player kneel, the penalties would be offset.

Crap ratings! Do they really want to piss us off?

Most games are boring and I rarely watch Monday or Thursday.

I wish the Trumptards would go back to NASCAR

The NFL was doing fine until after 9-11 and it go co-opted by the Right Wing. Remember when they made Rush Limbaugh a Monday Night Football host.

Yes NFL ratings a down some, but nowhere near as much as the rest of TV and there's a reason networks pay billions to air the games.

Jeez! They are NOT protesting the military. They are NOT protesting the flag or Jesus or apple pie. They are protesting the killing of unarmed black people in the streets by policemen.

It’s not a big secret that football fans tend to be more politically conservative than the average. I'm betting the league is far more worried about a drop in revenues from Trumpistas boycotting it for being "unpatriotic" and "dishonoring Our Troops."

just playing the anthem before the teams exit the locker room, pretty simple solution to a bad PR problem.
