Update: The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Trump has said the summit with Kim Jong-un "may not work out for June 12th," suggesting a potential delay. "If it doesnt happen, maybe it will happen later," the president added.

Ever since the announcement of a sit-down with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, President Trump and his allies have been eager to tout the meeting as an unprecedented diplomatic win. Earlier this month, Trump announced the June 12th summit on Twitter as if it were a pay-per-view boxing match. Republicans in Congress and a group of GOP governors have called for the president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. On Monday, the White House even released a military coin celebrating the historic showdown.

The problem with all of the bluster from Team Trump is that the meeting hasn't even happened yet, and some officials are now worried it never will. Last Tuesday, North Korea reversed what had largely been a conciliatory tone by releasing a statement expressing "a feeling of repugnance" toward National Security Adviser John Bolton while claiming they will not agree to denuclearize in exchange for sanctions relief. On Sunday, the New York Times published a report about how Trump is "increasingly concerned" that the summit will be a "political embarrassment," noting that he has been discussing whether it even makes sense to go through with the highly anticipated trip.

(10,749 posts)That the South Koreans say that theres a 99.9% chance at the summit will take place.
Kind of makes you wonder if somehow the North Koreans in the South Koreans are both playing Trump to make him look like a fool. The North Koreans play rope a dope by playing to the buffoons ego, and the South Koreans go in for a TKO just when the buffoon is trying to back out.
The North Koreans dont lose anything because, hey, they were willing to meet all along. South Koreans dont lose anything because all they have to do is shame the US into making no changes to US military position in the Korean Peninsula.

(14,883 posts)Trump is desperate for "wins" of any kind. But Trump is an utterly unrepentant bullsh*tter. So the detailed facts of any so-called "win" don't matter, only creating a media opportunity to declare such a "win."
As such, Trump needs a deal. ANY deal. And Kim knows this about Trump, because anyone who just watches any television (besides Fox News) knows this. So Kim will get concessions from Trump that no other POTUS would agree to, because he will give away extra just to get to the finish line of "a deal." ANY DEAL. No matter how bad for the USA, our allies, the world, or any party other than Dotard J Lump.
Add to that the problem that the Kims/DPRK haves a thorough history of not fulfilling their agreed-upon obligations, and Trump's impatience with, you know, DETAILS, and North Korea is absolutely not going to follow through on whatever they promise in any said deal with Trump.
If there ends up being any sort of agreement/deal with North Korea during Trump's presidency, it is CERTAIN that it will be bad for the USA and good for Kim.
