Dachshunds kill.ARDMORE, OK A pack of vicious dogs, some of them described as predominantly dachshunds, or wiener dogs, mauled an Oklahoma woman to death last week. It's unclear what caused the dogs to attack Tracy Garcia, 52, outside her home near Ardmore on Thursday, but their owner could face charges, according to media reports.
One of the dogs was shot after charging at a Carter County deputy who responded to the attack, and the other six were euthanized at the owner's request at a local veterinary clinic, the reports said.
Original reports that the dogs that attacked Garcia were pit bulls proved not to be true, Bryant said.
"A predominant breed in these dogs is definitely standard dachshund," Amanda Dinwiddie, the euthanasia technician at Ardmore Animal Shelter, told television station KXII. "They have really noticeable characteristics like their knobby legs, knees, very short legged dogs and their coats."

(16,373 posts)And we all loved her to pieces, but we didn't know about socialization back then and that dog got so mean. She would bite anyone, HARD, draw blood, even on us. She had major attitude. She was our first indoor dog and we spoiled her to no end. She lived to about ten or so and we were absolutely devastated when we had to put her down due to mammary cancer. My mom wanted to breed her and it just never worked. Eventually we had her spayed but it was too late, thus, the cancer. So I can understand, when a dog like that assimilates into a pack and develops a pack mentality. It's tragic.

(17,984 posts)Dachshunds were ranked the number one most bitey dog.
I haven't known many dachshunds, but those that I have met do seem like they have an attitude. I think a lot of people let their small dogs get away with too much simply because they are small. A small dog isn't as likely to do significant damage. But then there is this story! Although you are right about the pack thing, too. What's strange is that there were seven of them, they seemed to have been living in the woods, but the article mentions they talked to their owner before putting them down.

(16,373 posts)I think wiener dogs are very protective and that's part of the problem. Even though we had a mean one, most of the ones I have come across are sweet dogs. Willing to bet that these killer dachshunds were abused and probably a tragedy waiting to happen. But, getting back to what you wrote, I've read that, too, that they are basically dobermans with short legs. BTW, most dobermans are good dogs, too, and so loyal and beautiful. Let's face it, behind every bad dog, there's a clueless (like my family) or abusive owner.

(10,419 posts)Matter of fact, we know each other by doggie names rather than human names.
Anyway, there are two dachshunds a couple of houses away who are the meanest little critters on four (short) legs. The clueless owners let them run around off-leash and they'll attack humans and dogs walking the block minding their own business.
I adore animals, but these dogs are vicious little beasts.
Or were. I haven't seen them for a month or so.

(17,984 posts)They may be small, but new research found that one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 have snapped at their owners.
Dr James Serpell, one of the researchers, said smaller breeds might be more genetically predisposed towards aggressive behaviour than larger dogs.
Breeds scoring low for aggression included Basset hounds, golden retrievers, labradors, Siberian huskies and greyhounds. The rottweiler, pit bull and Rhodesian ridgeback scored average or below average marks for hostility towards strangers.
I think it is down to the clueless owners you mention. In many people's minds "small dog" = "harmless dog". I remember a story someone at the dog park I used to frequent told me about having her ankle torn open by a Chihuahua. The owner picked up the dog and bolted for the car. There are a lot of people who are not willing to take responsibility, and that extends to proper training as well.

(10,419 posts)With ownership/companionship comes responsibility. Our doggie is as sweet as they come, but extremely protective toward Mr. pig and me. Among other things, we call her "Doggie Doorbell" because she alerts us for every Amazon delivery.
However, we live near a school and avoid walking her during opening/dismissal times. I'm sure she wouldn't bite, but she barks at little kids as they walk by the house, so we just keep her inside.
Bad, irresponsible pet owners make me stabby.

(30,540 posts)the hell they're doing. No breed of dog is bad, owners and breeders are the problem.

(30,540 posts)they were brothers. The one didn't like my father and would growl at him when he came near but were never aggressive or tried to bite anyone. Those dogs were sweet and lovable after bring thru so much losing their original home. Even the one who didn't like my father eventually stopped growling, they never became buddies but at least tolerated each other. This has been awhile ago though late 80's, greedy breeders probably corrupted the breed.

(10,419 posts)I can't remember the last time I actually saw one. They were having inbreeding problems back then - hip dysplasia, etc. I adored them.
Have they been bred out of existence?

(31,374 posts)in the neighborhood where I lived in Chapel Hill. That dog never failed to bark when I walked by with Snowy or bark and pull at it's leash if we encountered it when we were out walking. It was a nasty little dog and the owner was clueless about how to control it.

(7,429 posts)At one point I had 4 of them. We now have 2. They are the sweetest dogs ever. But they love to bark. Why?? Because they are so little and they are scared. Hoagie (our standard) loves to bark at people as they walk by the house. That's it though. Once people get close, he turns the other way and goes under a bed somewhere. Jasmine (our mini) has always been ornery, but she's just very protective of us. She doesn't like anyone but us. But again once you get to know her you really love her.
I cannot believe they would ever attack someone, but this was a pack of dogs. I have a feeling they were stray dogs and were protecting their "home". It's just so weird to see someone die from them. I feel horrible.

(17,984 posts)It said that the owner consented to having the dogs put down. It also says that the dogs were covered in ticks and had been living in the woods for a while. So was there a single owner of all the dogs? Did they form a pack before or after they started living in the woods? I'll admit it's weird and there seem to be pieces missing. Makes me angry to think an irresponsible owner horded seven dogs.

(73,630 posts)And all three of those dogs have been nothing but sweeties. Hell, the only thing that you'd have to worry about is the fact that they'd all lick you to death.
This Weiner dog problem looks serious. Give me a pittie sweetie any day.

The dogs were NOT Dacschunds. They were Terrier mixes and one Collie mix.
This was sorted out over a week ago.
