I am livid right now. The efforts made by Trump and his cronies are working. As Trump stated to Leslie Stahl when asked why he is so relentless against the intelligence agencies and the media...I do it to discredit and demean you so that the American people will not believe what you write. What the hell!
53% of the American people think that the Russian probe is politically motivated! Unreal.
The average American voter does not immerse themselves into the issues of the day...not like we do. They do not have a clue as to what is going on and how our democracy is under existential attack. For the first time in a long time I am terrified that we will continue to be ruled by the uneducated and by the low information voter. This is NOT a good day.
The NFL now will punish anyone who does not stand up during the national Anthem. What the hell!
This just shows that they still do not understand why people were kneeling down. They continue to interpret it as unpatriotic and somehow a protest against the troops. Another example of how clueless the average American is. This is NOT a good day.
It is clear now (as it has always been I suppose) that there is a certain segment of our population that simply doesn't care about corruption in our government. If they continue to remain clueless, we may be in real trouble.
------------
On the other hand there are a handful of smaller tidbits of news that keep us hanging on...
The former head of Intelligence told Rachael that he believes that there is little doubt that the Russian hacking of our voting system did indeed have an impact on the results of the presidential election. I have felt that all along. Glad to see someone of high authority make such a statement.
Secondly....Stacy won in Georgia. An important win for our side and for the future of Georgia.
-------------
Still....I cannot shake this feeling that we are taking two steps forward and three steps back.

ON EDIT:
WE NEED TO HAVE TRUE EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP ON THE DEM SIDE. WE NEED TO TELL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO AS A PARTY...WE CAN WAIT NO LONGER!!!

(13,305 posts)..I'm sorry but our side is horrible at marketing/public perception, etc. And yes part of that is going up against a right wing media onslaught of lies and misinformation.
That being said, too often our side's approach is to concede some elements of the right wing arguments either by explicitly acknowledging some of those elements at worst, or at the least giving them credence by running away from either being a Democrat, or not calling ones self a liberal or progressive, or running as a "different kind of Democrat" or whatever else.
People don't want to hear that it's "in our platform"....they don't want to hear that it's "on our website".
Our Democratic leaders continue to operate under the notion of a fair and impartial press rather than what we have which is largely a national group of stenographers who are content to simply parrot what is said with no checks and balances on the truth.
Yes, folks like Pelosi and Schumer are very adept at and well versed in the minutiae of lawmaking, etc. But we need people out there who can bang the drum relentlessly on what our positions are.
The other bind they are in is that they can't lay out specific policies and laws and proposals because once it comes time to deliver, they are also too beholden to the vocal conservative minority within our party. It's one thing to say we're for universal healthcare, but when it comes time they have to let conservadems write the law in order to get their votes. Ditto on minimum wage laws, Unions, the military, etc.
I wish I knew what the solution was, I just know that we've been dug into a hole (some of which is our own doing) and I don't see any easy way out.

They are shredding our values each day, and gutting our democracy. I hope they all choke on that money.
But we must never do this

(11,443 posts)The daily propaganda about fake news and witch hunts must be working. It will take a 2008 level recession or maybe even a depression to get rid of this crowd. If Mueller releases a report that shows dozens of felonies committed by Trump, it wouldn't surprise me if half the population didn't believe it.

(58,785 posts)work on those who aren't particularly interested in being lead, OR on Republicans if the leadership is Democrat? Right there you have well over half the population eligible to vote.
Yes, charismatic bombast works on the right. Most conservatives are drawn to authoritarianism, and some very strongly.
For thrilling people on the left with stirring speeches, you have to go over to the farther left to find people yearning for a leader to follow. And spewing the kind of anger, blame, lies that work so well on the right on our side only works on niche groups. Think about it. When were most Democrats excited and cheering over a Trump-, Palin- or Sanders-style delivery? Pick the last Democratic president who thrilled millions with authoritarian certainty uncluttered with details of what and how.
Obama was a very good, charismatic speaker, but he compelled intellect not obedience. And when he did get passionate and demanding coming up to November 8, at least as close as he could get to thundering angrily as key speaker at the Black Caucus Dinner, it was powerful, it was widely televised, but it didn't work. At least not enough.
How about instead being self lead? Lead yourself to a group that's going door to door to GOTV. Take a friend with you. Just getting up and doing something to make a different makes us feel happier and more confident. Works every time. It's sitting around wishing someone else would lead us that does us in.

(2,404 posts)I think you have nailed the major reason why charismatic leadership may not be the answer...or even work. Things to think about. Thanks...

(58,785 posts)To each his own. But if 20,000 people started cheering excitedly at a string of familiar catchphrases, booing on cue, and chanting their leader's name in unison at each pause, I wouldn't have to look to know it wasn't Obama up there.
