New York Jets chairman, brother of Trump ambassador, says he'll pay fines for team players who protest during anthem
The chairman of the New York Jets said he will pay the fines for players on his team who protest during the national anthem, hours after the NFL announced a new policy penalizing players who do so.
Jets chairman Christopher Johnson told Newsday that he never wants to put restrictions on the speech of our players.
The NFL announced the new policy earlier Wednesday, saying that teams can avoid fines by allowing players to stay off the field during the anthem.
Those who remain on the field will be required to stand during the anthem and will be penalized if they protest.
Do I prefer that they stand? Of course. But I understand if they felt the need to protest, Johnson said.
There are some big, complicated issues that were all struggling with, and our players are on the front lines, he continued. I dont want to come down on them like a ton of bricks, and I wont.

(42,700 posts)This suggests that the league will penalize players who protest. Other stories indicate the league will penalize the team and that it will be up to the team whether they want to penalize players.

(16,949 posts)When I saw the 'solution' earlier today, I couldn't believe the NFL was ignoring the freedom of speech issue, by making a rule to penalize players who kneel. All Americans who think the excessive, deadly, violence against people of color is wrong will approve the protest. Every time people who don't think the violence is wrong will have to wrestle with their belief system when they see someone take a knee. I hope the players keep kneeling and ruin every game for the smug bastards who want to gag free speech in our country.
My husband was a veteran and a sports fan. He approved of the players taking a knee and hoped the symbolism of their action would make a difference. So do I.
I am veteran too,and far too avid of a sports fan according to my wife. We I had same conversation today. My example to her was to just sit back and watch. The same people gloating now are the same ones that bitch the loudest about not losing "their" amendment rights every other week when someone goes rogue on school children.
