National Memorial for Peace and Justice, aka 'the lynching memorial'
Went Monday. Only two weeks open, there was a crowd. Reminds me of the Vietnam wall in how personal and emotional it is. Go if you can. I did two days in Montgomery, AL with two friends. Here's the itinerary:
Monday
NMPJ, where people walking through it were so moved and heartbroken they couldn't speak
The Legacy Museum, which traces a direct line from slavery to mass incarceration
The Rosa Parks Museum
Tuesday
Montgomery Art Museum, a beautiful collection on beautiful grounds
The Freedom Riders Museum. One of our friends was a freedom rider at the age of 19. We were delighted to find her mug shot and recent photo there.
Southern Poverty Law Center, which has a great museum and beautiful memorial designed by Maya Lin (Vietnam wall)
Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where MLK began his pastoral career and civil rights leadership
It was a wonderful and deeply moving two days. Please go. Words can't capture the NMPJ memorial.
