actually be elected governor in Georgia? Not trying to start an argument about race or gender. Just thinking is that really possible?
I live next to West Virginia and don't think one would have any chance there.

(34,169 posts)...on the other hand, it seems very ordinary because she's smart, accomplished, and experienced.
She can win because she inspires voters and the demographics have been shifting. And of course, Trump.

(1,663 posts)The south has been moving in the right direction since 2015. In Louisiana, at a time when republicans were cleaning up, we elected a democratic governor. Now, all three major cities (Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport) are lead by a democrat. Did I mention that all three are black and female? There is definitely something going on in the south. I believe that candidate Stacey Abrams is on the right track. With the proper resources and gotv, she can and will win.

The potential is more than there but the struggle is going to be the registration slog and the GOTV slog including dealing with intimidation issues (notably in small towns and rural areas).

(58,647 posts)It sounds to me like she's an intelligent woman who has organized a grass roots campaign to get out the vote and is basing her campaign on issues that matter to the voters.
The only surprise is that we should be surprised that in 2018 she's the first one. My state currently has a pretty good governor that happens to be a white guy, but if Ms Abrams ran here, I would like to think she would have a good shot.

We don't live in Georgia but plan on supporting her run for governor.
The only way history will bend towards justice is if we grab a hold of it and pull it there.
