Yesterday I received a certificate for my 5 years of service at my current job. I work in the public sector with and for blind people.
As they read off the 5,10, etc year times of service there were "golf claps" for each person. Each well deserved.
Then we got to - I'll use the name "Morton" - 45 years. Morton travels to the homes of people without vision or with poor vision. He checks in on them and educates them on the ways to maintain their independence and new technology. Now he doesn't cover the whole state but to give you an idea of the territory he covers "North of the James (River)" it goes from almost The Bay to almost the Shenandoah Valley. Frame of reference- highway travel from Richmond to Bristol takes 5 hours - it's a big state.
I happened to be in his state vehicle a few months ago (he spends a LOT of time in that car) and his CD collection was all Bob Dylan.
From time to time he comes by the cafeteria and sits in on our "round table". Two topics are verboten - politics and religion. Topics range from ...there's really no telling from day to day ... state business to hockey to our kids/grandkids to architecture to travel to History to literally who knows.
Getting to know Morton in brief conversations, he grew up in Newport News near the shipyard. This was a time before there were suburbs so it was a thriving downtown community with local grocers, (with produce from the then rural Hampton) pool halls, dance halls, stick ball, hustles, and a constant influx of people from North Carolina and West Virginia coming in to make good money and learn a trade. The Apprentice school at the shipyard still trains people in everything from sheet metal to welding to ... the have their own dental school. Morton ended up in Houston and then joined the Coast Guard as a radio man for a few years. He made his way back to Richmond and started working where he does now in 1973.
One day I asked him, "How did a kid from Newport News end up going to Houston of all places?"
Morton looked up from his plate and said, "I took a bus down there to register people to vote".
He told me he got the shit beat out of him a couple of times while he was there.
45 years.

(14,011 posts)On a separate note, my wife worked at WGBH TV in Boston on the development team for DVS - Descriptive Video Service, television for blind and visually impaired. Perhaps that is one of the things you advise your clients to try out?

(14,011 posts)TVs will give you the description (if available) (SAP=Separate Audio Program)
DVS Service used to have a listing published that had their programs and listing of available content. Not sure if they still do.
"Movie night" sounds like fun!
The first time I was in the room for a movie night DVS screening it was powerful. Everyone in the room was very emotional in telling us afterwards what it was like to finally be able to "visualize" the action, the colors, the scenery on the screen! The kinds of things sighted people take for granted.
