-snip- (several paragraphs rehashing this week's on again, off again summit events)
In a sign of just how important the summit is to Mr. Kim, he held an unexpected meeting on Saturday with President Moon Jae-in of South Korea, where he expressed a fixed will to try to salvage it.
The measured response to the cancellation, and the extraordinary diplomatic scramble that followed, was a strong reminder, analysts said, that Mr. Kim not only wants a diplomatic deal with the United States. He may need one.
North Korea can still survive under sanctions, especially if China helps it, said Shin Beom-chul, a senior fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul. But as long as sanctions are there, Kim Jong-un can never deliver the kind of rapid economic growth he has promised for his people.
Mr. Kims stated desire to continue engaging with Mr. Trump even after such a high-profile snub does not necessarily mean the North Korean leader is willing to renounce his nuclear arsenal, the primary American demand. No matter how painful sanctions may be, analysts say, Mr. Kim would be unwilling to give up his nuclear weapons unless an accord left him feeling completely safe without them. The security of his family-run regime is a nonnegotiable priority.
North Korea has emphasized that it wants security guarantees and will not trade its nuclear arsenal for economic benefits alone. It has also rejected assertions that it has been pressured into talks because of the pain of sanctions, adding that it does not expect help from the United States in pursuing economic development.

(5,591 posts)Malignant egomaniacal narcissists lie and cheat and lie again to accomplish self-delusional outcomes that only have a twisted reality in their own gnarled brains. But without exception, they are survivalists no matter who or how many others are destroyed or threatened in their self-preservation obsession.
Kim Jung-un will use, promote and go after whatever is necessary to reach whatever immediate goal will secure his personal existence with the least amount of pushback or punishment.
Unless an agenda benefits their personal needs, neither can be trusted about anything, anyday, as far as you could throw a ton of granite. They serve only their egos.
The world would be wise not to assign any positive human values to their behavior otherwise.

Kim was raised to be a ruthlessly murderous holder of power, and I'm guessing he's not your normal guy, either, or especially intelligent. But my guess is Kim is far more competent and, though
dangerous, not at all "crazy" enough to destroy himself. Very unlike Trump.
As leader of a small, very weak nation in spite of his new bomb, he's a game player, as his father and grandfather were. One possibility is that he doesn't need to continue with the negotiations but wants to because he hasn't gotten what he's hoping to from idiot Trump, an incredibly weak sucker just begging to be taken. His father got more from very competent U.S. diplomats before he broke those deals, setting a pattern and high expectations for Kim. China might just also be making suggestions.

(58,785 posts)He's too timid to make the kind of bold, aggressive war plans he brought Bolton on for, but he tends to go into rages and lash out when he suspects he's made a fool of himself and I'm very afraid there are no limits on what that could lead to at his worst, if not stopped.

The stage Jong-in historically performs on is globally and humanly more threatening than the Cretins previous life long business platform, but the Cretin has been placed globally now and his incompetence is potentially just as lethal.
Both are frightening.
We all are going to lose if either threatening personality can prevail on this stage.
