USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor closed indefinitely

HONOLULU — Damage to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu was worse than expected and it will remain closed indefinitely, officials said.

Boat transportation to the attraction was suspended May 6 after one of the vessel operators noticed a crack on the outside of the memorial, Hawaii News Now reported .

Tourists were allowed to disembark at the memorial after crews completed interim repairs. But the cracks reappeared hours later, indicating a more serious issue.

"There is a brow or an edge where the visitor ramp meets the memorial, and at that point, there's been some fissures located on the exterior," said Jay Blount, a spokesman for the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. "After further investigation on the interior, it was determined that the structure is not supporting the loading ramp the way that we need."

Engineers are working to figure out possible long-term solutions.

I paid my respects back in 2012. One interesting thing is that the USS Missouri is docked a single ship's-length away from the wreck of the Arizona, and is said to be 'watching over' the grave of over a thousand sailors. I visited the Missouri back when it was docked in Bremerton, Washington, but didn't get a chance to re-visit it when I was in Hawaii.

I'm really not into flag-flailing, rah-rah patriotic frenzies, so I'm glad the Memorial and everything to do with a visit to the Arizona is solemn, dignified, and respectful.

Eh...they'll have it fixed and open in no time. Feel for those who are there and can't go out though.

April 19th, I'll have to check my pics to see if there's anything in them showing a crack

I took dozens as I'll never be there again and it was a bucket list item

But it is a massively sobering experience to stand there.

The Arizona was very powerful and took a huge emotional toll on me. I was in no mood for the cheering of the Missouri after that.

But I would encourage everybody to make it to the Arizona. Memorial Day is a terrible time for it to be closed.

Where the USS Missouri was berthed for decades until I watched it towed out on its way to Hawaii.

I crawled all over it as a young boy many times so I wanted to see it again also.

It is an amazing ship but yes it's not the same feeling of awe as the USS Arizona has for the visitor.

My Father was a Navy Shore Patrol policeman stationed in Pearl Harbor and when he got there it had only been on the bottom for 13 years.

It was in a much different condition then and he scuba dived on it a few times

He told me all about it when I was a boy so it was a bucket list item for me anyway.

You can feel it's history standing above it, haunting.
