Legendary journalist Carl Bernstein warned President Donald Trumps attacks on special counsel Robert Muellers Russia investigation could have very real ― and very dangerous ― implications for the United States.
(snip)
Its a question of whether lies, authoritarianism and the character of the president of the United States are going to take us to an authoritarian place where we have never been, he continued, in which he will bury a duly constituted and legal investigation that will determine whether or not the president is above the rule of law.
(snip)
What we are seeing, and what Donald Trump understands and the reasons he wants to bury, demean, undermine and put this investigation out of business for all time, is he knows Mueller has the ability and the facts to reveal him ... in a really terrible light, Bernstein said Sunday.
Mueller has enough to show Donald Trump and his lies in a way that definitely the American people, including a lot of Fox viewers perhaps, may be convinced that we are seeing a false narrative by the president of the United States, he continued. Trump does not want this story told. Thats the bottom line.

(18,625 posts)There doesn't seem to be anything that can actually be done about Trump.
Only if the Mueller investigation is allowed to follow it's course can anything be done.
Even if it does, the evidence will be contested and it's still possible that Congress will do nothing.
If Dems take the house Trump will be impeached but Dems won't have the numbers in the Senate to convict even if they win every single election in November. A trial will have to be conducted and a substantial proportion of Republicans will have to vote to convict. This is uncertain at best and unlikely at worst.
We may not get a real chance to make a change to Trump until 2020.
It's frustrating and sickening but that's the best chance we have.

(58,342 posts)(CNN)Rep. Tom Garrett of Virginia said Monday he won't run for re-election this year because he wants to seek treatment for alcoholism, becoming the 44th Republican in the House to retire ahead of the 2018 elections.
Garrett, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, announced his decision in a video statement, in which he also made the announcement that he's an alcoholic.
(snip)
Despite his association with Kessler (Garrett claimed he did not know about Kessler's background at the time of the photo), Garrett was among a group of Charlottesville-based politicians who forcefully denounced the rhetoric of the neo-Nazi groups that participated.
Garrett's decision will set off a scramble to determine a Republican nominee to replace him. The congressman already earned the GOP nomination at the end of March, so, according to Virginia law, his replacement is up to the purview of the Republican Party of Virginia. Virginia's GOP gives the party's congressional committee the authority to pick the replacement nominee. The committee could use whatever system they deem necessary to pick that replacement.

I also believe this November will see a bloodletting from the Republicans the likes of which haven't been seen in modern U.S. Political History
