(35,287 posts)Freedom OF speech was never meant to convey freedom FROM responsibility for one's speech.
She is still perfectly free to keep saying insanely stupid racist things today as she was on Friday...she just has to own the repercussions of her choice of words and speech...

While i stand corrected because i misunderstood the context, this is hardly a defense of Tur, in my mind.

(115,683 posts)(that is, the First Amendment) refers only to government action? The government can't suppress or restrict a person's speech, but a private business can set whatever standards it wants. ABC ditched Rosanne because she made a comment that violated their standards and probably generated a shit-ton of negative responses from the public. Since her racist tweet was bad for ABC's business, out she went. And they can do that.

(10,749 posts)No one is abridging anyone's right to free speech.
Roseanne was entitled to say what she did. She's committed no crime. No one stopped her. No one infringed on her rights.
But. . .
There are consequences to all actions, including free speech. Her words were abhorrent and repugnant, and she's entitled to be fired for them. She can keep saying those things. No problem. She can also keep not being hired.
Where's the problem?
