Ambien-maker to Roseanne: Racism is not a side effect of our drug

Sleeping drug Ambien can cause a host of side effects, but it's unlikely racism could be categorized as one, as Roseanne Barr claims.

Tuesday, the comedian wrote in a since-deleted tweet that "muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj." The "vj" stood for Valerie Jarrett, an Obama White House aide. This led to the cancellation of her hit ABC show Roseanne, and an apology from the comedian, who said at one point she was "Ambien tweeting," in another social media post that has since been removed.

Sanofi, who makes Ambien, tweeted a response Wednesday morning: "While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."

I've known people to do extremely bizarre things while on that medication, often not remembering what they did. I wouldn't give the company too much credit on this one, as they need to protect their bottom line.

It is good that the company condemns racism, but they also know their product has serious, even dangerous side effects.

have never taken a single pill for it because I've never felt that was a good way to address sleep problems. In fact, I've never borrowed any of the potentially dangerous prescription tablets friends and relatives pass around so helpfully, so have no experience with any type of them. I was prescribed a muscle relaxant once.

Nevertheless, I applaud this company for this very to-the-point response. And, along with all other companies, for producing valuable medications. You're so right, of course, about the often serious side effects some have experienced with Ambien, but it's not prescribed, used, misused, and abused, by so many because it doesn't work.

I've found that Melatonin sleep spray works really well, without side effects and its inexpensive too. My sleep patterns are getting much better and I rarely have to use it anymore.

Yeah, prescription sleep medications really scare me and Ambien has a terrible reputation. I've been given medication when I was in the hospital, but I absolutely refused Ambien. I know one woman who was outside naked, building a teepee for her children at midnight. Didn't remember a thing.

Of course, I'm glad whenever anyone calls out racism, regardless of the circumstances.

P.S. Oh, I was prescribed a muscle relaxant once a zillion years ago and as I recall, it was a very pleasant experience.

I took restful sleep for granted. It was never anything I had to work at. I had heard that people often had more problems sleeping when they got older and was disappointed to find out that was true for me. I had melatonin tablets, but they weren't terribly effective. The spray is amazing.

not drinking more water 1/2 before bedtime.

Tryptophan works for me as well.. so I don't take Melatonin all the time. 'Cause yes.. as I got older I don't sleep as well as all those younger years.

Its funny, you don't realize how wired you are, until you truly relax - "Oh yeah, I remember feeling like this a lot!"

experience. As for Ambien, wonder if her husband got pictures. We live on a rural, never-go-out-barefoot hill; lots of privacy, so naked would probably be okay, but the idea of wandering outside without shoes is alarming.

Thanks for the comment on melatonin, and nice to know it's helped you. It's timely, the drug's inexpensive, so I'm going to try it. Mine may be mainly a sleep phase disorder, and what I just read said that's what it's good for. I used to wake up in the small hours for work and I've not been able to reliably reset. Age I guess, never used to be a problem.

I seriously doubt her husband was crazy enough to take pictures of her!

So many things I used to hear seniors say about, "Wait until when you get older........blah, blah, blah," and I'd think, that's not going to happen to me. Well, not everything they said came to pass, but far too many did.

CBD oil helps too, though I haven't used it for sleep. It is very expensive, so if I need help with sleep, I go to the melatonin. Fortunately, I don't need it very often anymore.

Happy sleep!!!

I used to drink coffee with desert to set off the sweetness before bed, a couple cups if I felt like it. Now I can't, but that's okay because my taste for sweets is a thing of the past also. Sigh...

CBD's illegal for all but a few extreme medical conditions here in Georgia. We now have someone in the extended family with a vape and paraphernalia store, and if he couldn't provide me some "wholesale" I'd eat an empty vape, but I'll just try the melatonin. Nice to hear the spray works well for Cha also.

Happy sleep, everyone.

coffee was an all day beverage. Most people had coffee after dinner and if company came over in the evening, coffee was served. I can barely recall my parents without a cup of coffee. I have pretty much been the same way, until recent years. Now I drink a part regular and decaf mix, and started adding chicory as well. I still like the taste of coffee, so I'm trying to find compromises.

My taste for sweets has diminished as well, but that is a good thing. Now I can actually eat just one cookie, instead of half a bag! And I rarely crave them anymore.

It doesn't distort your thinking, might calm you down or help you sleep, that's about it. I know, I took it. If anything, ambien would make you less likely to post irrational, bigoted bullshit. It would take the edge off any negativity you harbor.
