Back in February, Dick's Sporting Goods made a bold decision to stop selling assault style rifles and high capacity magazines, and to raise the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21.
Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) stock price surged by as much as 27% after it reported stronger than expected quarterly sales and profit Wednesday.
It's the first measure of their decision to pull away from some guns.
"There's been a number of people who have started shopping us, or said they're going to shop us more, because of the policy," said Chief Executive Officer Ed Stack on an earnings call with analysts Wednesday. "There's definitely been some benefit of people who joined us, so to speak, because of the policy."

(82,849 posts)Maybe those "responsible gun owners" aren't as numerous or influential as they like to portray themselves. This could spell trouble for the NRA terrorists.

(23,313 posts)on a travel team. At a tournament last weekend, I was talking to another parent about the phone app called Tourney Machine that Dicks owns...its a great app where you can folllow teams, brackets, tournament schedules etc...makes it really convenient to keep track of whats happening in any given tourney. Anyway, this parent went OFF on me saying he cant support Dicks because of their firearms policy. I said, Really? Its one of the reasons I DO support Dicks. Theyre doing their part to make sure our boys dont get liquified by an AR weapon in school. He hasnt talked to me since. 🙄

This is also done after the POS systems close at night. Batch jobs are delayed if a single store stays up past closing and cannot transmit their numbers. If there is an issue with the stores server, and they cannot close properly nd transmit their numbers, a decision is made at corporate to approve bypassing that store's information, and backfill later on. If a store's numbers are down, even by a percent, there's generally some sort of hell raised.
If there is an increase, it's not because of playoff sales, which would have occured in past years.
I worked in retail IT for 10 years before moving to the financial sector.

Dicks - is using the anti-gun movment as an advertising demographic - probably not a bad thing.
And - they DID stop selling at the F&S stores - but its not quite like they are making it out to be.

(135,831 posts)Dick's Sporting Goods, the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, will stop selling assault-style weapons like the one used in the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting.
The company said it will also raise the minimum age for all gun sales to 21. Dick's (DKS) will not sell high-capacity magazines that allow shooters to fire far more rounds than traditional weapons without reloading, as well as other accessories used with weapons similar to the AR-15.
The company expects criticism from gun rights advocates as well a hit to sales, Dick's CEO Edward Stack said on CNN's "New Day."
"The hunt business is an important part of the business, no doubt about it. And we know there will be some backlash," he said.
But he said he and other executives at the company were moved by the Parkland school shooting survivors' push for gun control measures.

(4,835 posts)As far as the Dick's stores goes - the only change is the raising the age to purchase to 21.

(4,835 posts)Nick Cruz bought a gun at Dicks...
The story is Dicks is still needlessly arming our communities.
Raising the age to 21 sounds like about the only change here...and the discontinuation of the ARs at F&S - which arent "Dicks" - technically.

(31,261 posts)I was behind a couple, honestly they looked a little rightwing, but after paying, I heard the guy say "let's look at the stuff over there" and then he made a quick positive sentence about Dick's getting rid of assault weapons. I had driven past two other sporting goods suppliers to Dick's exactly because of their policy on assault weapons.

(11,949 posts)Buy some fishing stuff there although at this stage in life I can afford to buy American made rods and they have few, but not many stores do.
I may re-start duck hunting this year and if I do I will purchase a new shotgun there. Holds 3 shells. Designed to kill ducks, not kids.
The AR owners are a minority of gun owners. But they are loud and obnoxious.

(19,200 posts)Sometimes these sales protests peter out after the initial few months. We have to make it attractive to other businesses to do the same.

(495 posts)Not quite as big of a selection or as cheap as buying online, but at least you get to hold the plastic before you buy it.
Now I just have to align my opportunities and energy to get out there and throw.
