(1,105 posts)I'm something like the 7th or 8th generation in my family to serve. Dad received the Silver Star in WWII and I know he'd agree with Dan on this matter.
None of us, going back to the early 19th century, served so Donnie O, or anyone of his ilk, could turn this country into a fully owned subsidiary of ANY foreign power.

(52,193 posts)really, if we didn't know damn well it was just a distraction tactic, we'd have to say it's completely idiotic to:
(a) interpret kneeling as a sign of disrespect (on the contrary, it's *respectful* in any other circumstance, such as when proposing or praying or getting knighted) and also
(b) then go the extra derivative step of interpreting a perceived offense against the anthem and/or the flag as an affront to veterans. the anthem and the flag belong to all of us. veterans have no special claim to it.

(6,640 posts)Maybe the whole audience should kneel too. They would not throw out paying customers, would they??
ps my father and stepfather both fought in wars, they would not expect the players to give up kneeling.

Of course, if Trump had his way, his critics would be either bankrupted or jailed.

Don the Con and Don the Vet are two very different men - one is an Authoritarian Fascist the other a patriot who respects what this country really stand for.

Civic Justice
(870 posts)Sadly, we as a nation are allowing it to go on far too long. It insults everything people have served and died to build, support and protect.
Trump and the Republican Congress should get the penalty for Treason Against Everything American Democracy is built upon, everything it stand to represent.
This attack on our Judicial system and the civility of people to protest, is something American should NEVER tolerate and certainly not endure for the length of time and the expanse of the insults he's done to America, American People and our American systems and institutions.

(28,941 posts)We veterans have sworn or affirmed to protect, preserve and defend the Constitution of United States; that's our first and most important order.
I'll take a knee or link arms with those football players; they're true Americans.

(1,325 posts)If someone kneeling during the national anthem bothers you more than the sight of your fellow citizens being gunned down in the streets, then perhaps you are part of the problem! I am a veteran and I approve of Dan's message!

(442 posts)Not only does this veteran agree wholeheartedly but this entire ridiculous debate brings to mind one of my favorite pieces of political writing... take it away Aaron Sorkin:
"You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours." You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms.
Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.

(2,199 posts)and I wore Army Green for 38 years and always supported the Democratic Party. While in green I did keep my political preference to myself, tried to be apolitical as most officers and senior NCOs did. Well said Mr. Currie!
