There are ways to insult people that don't involve denigrating other groups.

4. Yes, but he wasn't impelled to say that he had "crossed a line."

And certainly wasn't as widely screeched at by those who otherwise identify as liberal. I don't think that Sam was denigrating any groups. And if Colbert had been a homosexual, do you think that he would have been impelled to express regret at all?

Sam is a woman, and a feminist. That makes a difference.

7. I think her show is outstanding--record each episode--but

this incident really puzzles me. She and her writers are outstanding at clever turns of phrase (as well as other things) and the offending word was said so quickly (and bleeped out on my recording) that I don’t understand why she didn’t substitute something more creative, funny, and devastating. I don’t see what was gained by using a term that offends many people, especially given her awareness as a feminist. It doesn’t seem like her to do something really controversial (and at women’s expense) simply to create buzz for her show.
