(13,685 posts)When the hate is displayed so publicly it is our duty to make them eat their words.

(68,644 posts)Can't we save that epithet for more clearly homophobic posts?
Maybe the OP thinks that jobs is a better selling point, without believing that LGBT rights are any less important.
I think it's a strategy comment, not an opinion of what counts.
Damn I hate this shit: homophobia and homophobia accusations.
Fresh_Start
(11,365 posts)you are correct it is a strategy comment because I honestly felt we were winning and don't want to see the Tax issue and the Mittwit issue all lost in the 'family values' bullshit put out by the GOP
we keep letting them move the discussion into the no win territory of "family values" (which I don't believe they have but they've managed to sell americans on that erroneous belief)

That's what this post reminds me of.

(108,903 posts)Just a bunch of noisy shit & ultimately rand Paul & crew are right - it's just their right?
We're not at the lunch counter discrimination - but we're breathing down it's neck - glad to see you support the bigots?
tritsofme
(19,900 posts)You made a completely unfounded and ridiculous accusation, just because the OP had an opinion different from yours, not on substance, but strategy.
I don't even necessarily agree with the OP, but you don't do any help to your cause by declaring people who substantively agree with you on gay rights bigots. It's an Uncle Leo act.
Have a discussion on why your strategy is better.

(26,314 posts)I'd argue as a movement we are failing in epic fashion in dealing with income and wealth disparity, floundering on the best day in protecting civil liberties, and are between mediocre and dicey on equality.
I also lean in the direction that if we don't deal with the economics successfully all the rest will wither and die. No bucks, no Buck Rogers.
Of course equality is far from a distraction, the distraction is trying to use government as the tool to enforce thought and speech control because it seems like an amazingly poorly thought out reaction likely to have a much greater net downside than any possible gain.
There also seems to be a desire among many who identify on the left to focus on social issues and largely let the economics go. The idea that anything like actual equality can come out of this system seems absurd.
I'm just not seeing much walking or gum chewed over the last several decades, in fact we are going backward pretty damn fast and ever more free trade, corporate power, and concentration of wealth while workers have less and less hand by the year and opportunity dwindles.
Walking and chewing gum at the same time sounds good but is it actually true in real world outcomes? In a corporatist nation there are no rights or self determination. Empty pockets and scurrying between low wage jobs to maintain the home fires makes any trip to the mountaintop damn near impossible.

(12,482 posts)More Americans agree with Democrats on gay marriage than Republicans. This isn't the 1990s. Yes economics needs to be the focus and income inequality front in center in the discussion. And im sure that's why I hear the president and democrats talk a lot more these days about Republicans voting down his plan to cut taxes for the middle class while raising them on the one percent. Not to mention the fact Romney will raise taxes on the middle/working class while lowering them for people like himself. The only time I have seen social issues really come up im this cycle has been in the Republican primaries where they all tried to outcrazy each h other, driving up Republican negatives generally .

(32,265 posts)I also see how the RWer's are reacting to this and I don't think we will be raising awareness if we continue what they perceive to be an attack against a fine, Christian businessman.

(32,265 posts)an issue to beat us about the head with. The man was asked a question, he gave his opinion (to which he is entitled, even though he is wrong), and it was protested which focused a lot of attention on the issue. By continuing to use this incident, it will be seen and reported as an unfair attack on his freedom of speech or whatever. I am afraid that it will turn around and bite us in the ass.

(11,304 posts)Boycott. Is good. But nothing is going to move the man in charge but boycott. That effects his bottom dollar. I mean you have to be in a damn cave not to know what has been going on.

Answer, keeping the poor and middle class conservatives hooked to the GOP.
Win - win for both sides, the rich get richer while hooking the poor suckers at their own cost.

(108,903 posts)But this kind of homophobia is allowed on DU.
Sounds like orders came down from HQ to squelch this "distraction". Won't happen, though. I've been boycotting CFA for decades because it's a "Christian Business". Now that they're guilty as charged, I'll be bringing it up as often as possible.
Hint: Look for threads about Pizza Ranch in the future. There's a reason the Republican candidates were posing there for pictures in the Iowa primary season. It's run by crazy Christianists, hence, Santorum Salad.

(552 posts)although it may or may not work in our favor, it is the right thing to do. We wouldn't allow a business to do this to latinos, african americans, muslims, atheists, Jews, asians or the tons of other groups who make up our party. Why another standard for LGBT? That's not right. Geez it makes it sound like we are second class in our own party.
I thought this kiss in thing was dumb though. We should have donated food to a pantry or found some other way to protest them. How did this whole kiss in thing even work out? Are Chik-Fil-A's even near areas where lots of gays live?

(2,657 posts)be twice as vocal on the left! In nation wide poll after poll More and More Americans are accepting of the "Gay life-style" Lots in my generation and younger generations see it as needing to have been over and EVERYONE gay Straight should have the same rights and benefits.
THIS is why Liberals loose they let go of things. They runaway from a fight.

(552 posts)aren't following anti-discrimination laws. From what I read, the alderman in Chicago has been trying to get Chik-Fil-A to say they will follow state law on discrimination for 9 months and they won't commit. If a white power group wanted to build a store in Chicago and wouldn't commit to hiring african americans would they be allowed to build? Gay rights just aren't taken as seriously as other rights.
