A Graduation Gift................for Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania students..............

Graduating eighth-graders received a unique parting gift from their Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, school this week: ballistic shields for their backpacks.

A company that makes the bulletproof inserts gave them to students during a ceremony Monday at St. Cornelius School Catholic School, outside Philadelphia. Faculty members also received the 10-by-12-inch inserts.

The 15 students turned the shields — which from a distance look like a thin laptop — around and around. Some scratched their heads.

Unequal Technologies, a "protective sportswear" company based in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, says they resist many types of bullets, shotgun blasts, shrapnel and knives.
