Kathleen Clyde would end voter purge process if elected Ohio secretary of state

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Democratic Rep. Kathleen Clyde says she'd do away with the state's practice of purging inactive voters if elected secretary of state in November.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday upheld Ohio's method of removing voters who don't cast ballots for six consecutive years. Clyde said the process leads to the removal of eligible voters, and it's not necessary for the state to maintain accurate voter rolls.

"There's no reason to purge. We have laws in place to purge voters when they become ineligible," Clyde said in an interview. "We don't need to guess by sending mailings and seeing they didn't vote in a few elections."

Clyde said there's ample evidence that thousands of voters who showed up to vote had been wrongly purged.

Clyde's Republican opponent Sen. Frank LaRose indicated he would keep the process in place.

"Today's Supreme Court decision will allow the secretary of state to continue carrying out his constitutional responsibility, in accordance with Ohio law, to maintain accurate voter rolls," LaRose said in a statement. "By working with the bipartisan county boards of election we can balance the responsibility to maintain accurate voter rolls while still being fair to all voters."
