Kamala Harris @SenKamalaHarris 7h7 hours agoWe have a bill to stop the Trump Administration's zero-tolerance policy of ripping children away from their parents. It's called the Keep Families Together Act.
Heres what you can do: contact your representatives & voice your outrage. Then, call the White House & do the same.

...that's a very compelling short vid Sen. Harris produced, and a solid legislative effort to keep immigrant families from being separated by the government.
Very presidential (candidate).

(7,011 posts)legislative fix from Democrats. His next tweet is going to be
"Democrats now see how they have to fix their bad law. No wall no deal."
This shit show is on trump and the GOP. This bill is only going to bring focus on Democratic powerlessness. This is an awkward play. There hasn't been a major Democratic bill passed the GOP gained control.

(85,998 posts)... they're just lying.
This is the Democratic Senate stepping up to check the president's autocratic order to separate these families. It's literally what we send them there to do.

(7,011 posts)This is an autocratic punitive policy. trump is not going to sign a law checking this policy. Did you see that the GOP put out another bill, this time holding both DACA and the incarcerated children hostage to the building of the wall.

(85,998 posts)...this is literally what these elected officials are supposed to do. Push to enact laws to protect people and provide a check on the Executive.
Cynicism is a luxury these families can't afford.
LuvLoogie
(7,011 posts)That will become law until Democrats retake the House Senate and Whitehouse. All three. That's the reality.
What these families can't afford is to wait two and a half years. There aren't enough Republicans that would vote for a Democratic bill. McConnell would never bring it to a vote. Neither would Paul Ryan. And trump is still in office.
It isn't cynical to recognize that trump is a bigot and that the GOP congress is complicit at best.

(85,998 posts)...this isn't too complicated. This is politics 101.
You don't just look at the numbers and sit on your hands because some republicans might vote against you. Nothing happens in a vacuum. This how you generate support for legislation. I really don't know why it needs more explanation.
Myriad bills that became law began as someone's lost cause, against overwhelming numbers. This is how you generate support in the public, and pressure the opposition.
Maybe you can explain just what you expect them to do. There's absolutely nothing BUT cynicism in your responses.
Honestly, Democrats get slammed here no matter what they do, so it's always better for me to defend them doing something, than responding to complaints that they're not doing enough.

(7,011 posts)This policy of trump's is a political action. He is constantly blaming Democrats for needing to fix "their bad law," that he is forced to do the separations. This is their official position and it is being pushed by Sessions, SHS, and now Paul Ryan.
Ending the separations does not require legislation. A democratic bill focused on the separations allows the GOP to stymie any action until the Democrats have the numbers. It plays into GOP talking points. It plays into Ryan's game of tying the separations to the wall.
This is a full fledged society, not a fledgling democracy born out of warring tribes. We already know this is wrong. The cynicism is coming from the White House, and they are trying to bait the Democrats into building trumps wall. You know how they play the game.
bigtree
(85,998 posts)...it's an obvious attempt to prevent Trump from carrying out his policy. Outlawing Trump's executive action separating families would effectively end his ability to carry it out.
I think most people understand that. Ending the separations while Trump is in office absolutely requires a law. You readily admit republicans aren't going to do the right thing by themselves. They need to be forced. This bill is a lever which would force Trump and his republicans to do the right thing by these families.
It has nothing to do with Trump's wall, which will NEVER be built. Furthermore, Democrats have been promoting comprehensive immigration reform for the entirety of republican rule. There's just no overriding logic to your complaint. It's all 'don't do this, because republicans will play politics.' then it's, 'promote major legislation,' instead.
I'm going to leave this alone now, and let you swim around in it on your own.

(19,460 posts)A bill like that will never get past the House. Do you really think the GOP gives one damn about children, especially brown ones? We are all morally outraged about all of this, but nothing is going to happen unless we retake the House and Senate.
