Hawaii's Erupting Volcano Is Making It Rain Green Gems

Hawaii's Erupting Volcano Is Making It Rain Green Gems

These stones are known as olivine crystals. They're common minerals found the world over, and seeing them in Hawaii is nothing out of the ordinary. Finding them because of a volcanic eruption, however, is something that doesn't happen every day.

According to geologists at the University of Hawaii, the crystals are carried along with lava out of the volcano and into the sky. Some of that lava instantly cools in the air. When that happens, it turns into a rock known as pumice. The transformation is so sudden that gasses are trapped within the pumice and force their way out, leaving the rock lighter and full of holes. From these holes, olivine rains over the island.

As far as silver linings go, getting littered with shiny, harmless green crystals is pretty good. But the island of Hawaii, one of the five islands that make up the state, has been sent through the ringer with the explosion of Kilauea now stretching well into its second month.

Kilauea has been an influential force on Hawaiian history, continually changing the nature of the island. Now Hawaiians wish it would take a break.

My family lived in Hawaii a few years when I was a kid and my dad was in the CG. When she found out that someone packed a lava rock when we moved away, she was PISSED and blamed it for all the bad luck we'd had. She mailed it back to a friend there to place back on the ground. I can't say it improved our luck, however.

On another note, a minor quibble... Hawaii is not made up of FIVE islands, but HUNDREDS. Five MAIN islands, sure, but most would say 6. But I suspect Pele would not appreciate that slight either.

Like...it isn't about improving luck, just removing bad luck. I'm heavily into the lore of gods, goddesses, Norse mythology and etc. So when I saw this, I instantly think...someone is dumb enough to take these off the islands.

If I ever go, I would warn those with me to not take any lava rocks, black sand or these little green gems. Like the idea of having a genuine lava rock is cool, but no where near worth the risk. Like I have a rock garden with rocks from different states, Hawaii...yeah I might skip taking any type of rock from there.

either they or some relative or friend of a friend had an encounter. The belief is strong! Always keep offerings in your trunk, because the Menehune were known to "help" stranded motorists, but would get mischievous if they were not properly thanked!

She originally landed on the Big Island for her high school year "abroad" from her school in Germany. For some reason, she seemed to like it there (can't imagine why, ha ha!), and asked to stay on for one more year, and graduate there. I warned her than German universities would not accept a U.S. high school diploma, as German high schools have 13 years, and consider 12 years as "incomplete." She said, then to hell with them, I'll apply for college in the U.S. She did, and the rest is (some amazing) history.
Here are some images from her graduation:

That was one HELL of a memorable graduation ceremony, let me tell you! Well worth traveling halfway--12 time zones!-- around the world to see.

It's like my friend wanting to explore Navajo lands this summer because she wants to encounter a skinwalker. I told her no. Not disrespecting native lands because she thinks she's Dean Winchester.

The people deserve something nice for all the trouble they've endured with the volcano. That's a heck of a souvenir!
