Trump immigration comments spark chaos in GOP

Trump immigration comments spark chaos in GOP
By Scott Wong and Melanie Zanona - 06/15/18 11:47 AM EDT

House GOP leaders decided at the last-minute on Friday morning to scrap a planned whip check on a compromise immigration bill after President Trump said he “certainly” would not sign the legislation.

Trump’s comments have thrown into doubt whether House Republicans will even take up the thorny issue of immigration this crucial election year. Immigration votes had been planned for next week.

Leadership said it will try to whip the bill next week after they seek clarity about what exactly Trump meant in his Friday morning interview on Fox News, Chief Deputy Whip Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), a key member of leadership, told reporters Friday.

But McHenry cautioned that House Republicans won’t “take on” the thorny issue of immigration unless they have the backing of President Trump.

“We want to get clarity on the president’s position on this bill,” McHenry said just off the House floor. “Republicans are not going to take on immigration without the support and endorsement of President Trump.”

Trump’s impromptu remarks threw a wrench into GOP leadership’s immigration plans.

They had spent months facilitating delicate negotiations between centrist and conservative Republicans and unveiled draft legislation on Thursday and set a vote for next week on the compromise bill and a more conservative immigration bill.

This is the third compromise bill tRump has opposed.

The fucker is not going to sign any immigration bill unless it means deporting anyone not born here and building his fucking wall.

After 10 days, a bill passed by Congress automatically becomes a law if the President doesn't act and the Congress is still in session.

After 10 days, if the President doesn't act and Congress is not in session then the bill is automatically vetoed, this is called a pocket veto

He really does not a want any independent legislature, even one ruled by his party.

He wants to rule by command. Legislative processes inherently run by compromise. Trump does not want to compromise ANYTHING.

Republican representatives need to understand that Trump wants them to be a powerless rubber stamp
