Big Picture, Folks, Big Picture - By Josh Marshall

Sometimes it is important to step back and see the larger picture. On Fox News this morning, President Trump called the former leadership of the FBI “scum.” The former deputy director of the FBI, a longterm target of the President, has already been fired and seems to be in legitimate danger of being charged with crimes. Peter Strzok, the former high-ranking FBI Counter-Intelligence agent with the texts, is now likely to be fired, according to press reports this morning. Last night on Sean Hannity’s show, the President’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani said that to “redeem” themselves Rod Rosenstein and Jeff Sessions had one week to jail Strzok.

This morning Fox News’ Steve Doocy asked President Trump: “What you’ve seen so far, should James Comey be locked up?” The President’s response was basically, “Probably, we’ll see.” Watch the video here to see his exact words.

When candidate Trump threatened to jail Hillary Clinton people were rightly aghast. I at least didn’t think she would actually be jailed. The threat itself is unconscionable between political opponents. But for Andrew McCabe the possibility of being jailed is on track to be a legitimate possibility. The DOJ appears to be considering charging him with a crime. McCabe already lost his job and his pension. The same seems in the works for Strzok. It’s hard to imagine what crime they’d come up with for him. But it would have seemed hard to believe that was going to happen with McCabe too.

Step back from each particular and you start to see that lots of key people involved in the Trump-Russia and Clinton email probes have already been damaged professionally and at least threatened with imprisonment, some quite credibly. All three have either been fired or appear to face imminent firing. Is anyone crazy enough to think that people involved in current investigations of this President, his family and friends, aren’t paying attention to this?

Nixon's gross misuse of power to go after his political enemies and critics. Trump has done more to weaken the US democracy than Nixon ever dreamed of, and for the most part he's allowed to escape justice without even a mild rebuke from the free press or the oversight obligations of our supposedly coequal branches of government.

The lesson they took from Watergate wasn't to not do the crime, it was to do everything openly and dare them to come after you.

They have no shame or conscious.
