.

There were security holes in WhatsApp over the past 2 years. Group chats were compromised.

If those were patched recently, then it might take a few weeks to crack them. If those messages are less than that, there's a high probability they are already decrypted. The NSA has servers which are just a tad behind current decryption methodologies, forcing a constantly evolving set of standards to further protect data. While it' a pain to decrypt en mass data for cyber-security checking, once the target data is identified, they will be set to be crunched on by hundreds, if not thousands, of cryptographic coprocessors.

WhatsApp is excellent to stave off broad surveillance but its effectiveness becomes questionable when messages are specifically targeted with NSA resources.

What would the metadata reveal?

Phone numbers or ISP of persons contacted? Date and time of communication?

Whatsapp is the biggest concern, for good reason they switched to using the Signal encryption algorithm two years ago (Spring 2016) but they store more metadata like date, time stamp, phone numbers... that Signal doesn't have even if ordered to. Unfortunately Whatsapp doesnt encrypt backups locally or to icloud.

But if he had that many messages still on the phone, sounds like he didn't delete them and he may have had to surrender the password or even had it stored.

If he had a laptop or desktop then the signal messages are typically stored in plain text but the drive they are on may be encrypted.

So at the very least they know most of the persons he communicated to and when, at best they have his passwords to decrypt his PC drives & phone, keys to the kingdom. I would guess the NSA was very interested in his communications and stored everything.

Also you have to trust the person on the other end isnt compromised or isnt a man in the middle, manaforts daughter phone got hacked and hundreds of screenshots were leaked to darknet in 2016 including some messages where she said her dad is essentially a thug and has made people dissappear.

Another thing, after WhatsApp switched to using Open Whisper's Signal in 2016, their app continued to function in China, unlike Signal which quickly gets blocked by the great firewall of china's AI, so... makes one wonder why its still allowed if its "secure".

When I read your post, I suspected that information is what you were referencing. It's good to keep learning about these technologies we use since we expose ourselves to so many dangers in the electronic realm.

Enjoy your weekend!

If you're in Windows, right click on an image (.jpg, .gif, etc) file that you've got handy ... choose Properties at bottom, then click the Details tab. All that 'stuff' there ... is the image files metadata. It is a list of definable properties, along with the values of those properties.

If you get that concept, you'll likely understand what people mean every time you hear it.

are in the FBIs hands. If some kind of code was used, then the FBI has broken that code. Cohen knows that has happened that whatever he has advised his old friend, is in the FBI's hands. Therefore, Cohen may have said quite a few illegal statements. Like urging Trump to "cover up" some activities that might be "totally illegal"...

.....Urging someone to cover up and "hide" a crime.............is a crime..In conclusion, the FBI has proof that Cohen has committed a lot of crimes, and Cohen might spend a whole lot of time in jail. (perhaps all of the remaining time in his life)....Perhaps for a lot less time in jail, Cohen will cooperate by telling all he knows about Trump ,and that is a whole lot...perhaps that is it. And that could be why Trump will be going or has gone...............ballistic

IANAL, even faking one like Cohen.

But haven't I read that accepting a pardon is also a guarantee that you have to testify under oath without the shield of self-incrimination?

I don't know what happens if during testifying you pull a "sessions": I can't remember, etc.

may have to testify against Trump. And, if he lies about what he is saying, that is also illegal..And the FBI, has a whole lot of proof that he might be lying. Which the FBI could charge him with...So, Trump is going ballistic and may indeed fire Mueller...........

....According to some previous information posted here, if Trump fires Mueller...the Republicans have warned he will be impeached. I don't know if the pukes can or will carry through on that one, but it is out there for all to see. Firing Mueller will put Trump in a dangerous position....so I an't going to go into that one. If it happens, then it happens. Plenty of discussion then. It ain't happened yet..

... its so unfair what they're doing to him. When in reality they're taking down a organized criminal enterprise, with trump playing a big part of it. Trump will also before its all done face tampering with a witness , or witnesses too. Criminals shouldn't do the crime , if they don't want to do the time. Cohen will be screwed to if he's pardoned. Trump is in a corner , so watch what he does to obstruct this one also. Manafort are screwed no matter what they do at this point, unless they give them witness protection program coverage for their turning on others, especially on trump.
