I had a Stouffer's frozen dinner

(99,710 posts)My buddy took the Air Force test and enlisted with the belief he would be a mechanic. They made him a cook. He was so distraught he went to the Air Force chaplain. He eventually liked it. He could make a restaurant grade lasagna when he got out.

(7,300 posts)We ate very well, especially when the cooks were actual Army cooks as opposed to civilian contractors. The Army cooks had a lot of reasons to do a good job like promotions and not getting their ass kicked.
The best food I had was in Advanced Individual Training (AIT) where we learn our specific jobs. I was lucky enough to eat meals prepared by cooks also in AIT and those soldiers REALLY wanted to graduate so they were very conscientious.
My experience with a civilian run Dining Facility (we don't have mess halls anymore) was good just not as good as the soldier operated facilities.

1985 to 1991 and recalled for Desert Storm or as some of us called it, Oil War One.
An Army runs on its stomach and low crawls on it, too! Lol

(99,710 posts)There's something to be said about upholding the principle that strong countries can't steal land from weak countries just as upholding the principle a strong kid on the playground can't steal the weak kid's lunch.
Also, Desert War One was fought under a UN flag, Desert Two wasn't.

(7,300 posts)We wouldn't have done shit, imo. Look at Sarajevo. No oil, no action until it was too late.
I also met many Kuwaitis at Ft Bliss who were learning to Air Defense.systems. I asked each one I met why they hadn't returned to defend their country. Maybe 20 or 30 all together but every damn one replied along the lines of that that what the US Army is for. We had very little respect for them as a fighting force.

"We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America." - April Glasspie was appointed ambassador to Iraq in 1988. She was the first woman to be appointed an American ambassador to an Arab country. She had a reputation as a respected Arabist, and her instructions were to broaden cultural and commercial contacts with the Iraqi regime.
Another version of the transcript (the one published in The New York Times on 23 September 1990) has Glaspie saying:
But we have no opinion on the Arab-Arab conflicts, like your border disagreement with Kuwait. I was in the American Embassy in Kuwait during the late 1960s. The instruction we had during this period was that we should express no opinion on this issue and that the issue is not associated with America. James Baker has directed our official spokesmen to emphasize this instruction. We hope you can solve this problem using any suitable methods via Klibi (Chedli Klibi, Secretary General of the Arab League) or via President Mubarak. All that we hope is that these issues are solved quickly.
When these purported transcripts were made public, Glaspie was accused of having given tacit approval for the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, which took place on August 2, 1990. It was argued that Glaspie's statements that "We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts" and that "the Kuwait issue is not associated with America" were interpreted by Saddam as giving free rein to handle his disputes with Kuwait as he saw fit. It was also argued that Saddam would not have invaded Kuwait had he been given an explicit warning that such an invasion would be met with force by the United States."
We fucked him

We should've been miserable for the amount of field work we did, but we had a blast the whole time.

(82,849 posts)It's a well-supported ride in lovely countryside on the east side of the Willamette Valley. The 100 mile course goes up to Silver Falls, but fat 60 year olds do better without that climb, so it's 70 miles for me.
I'm just going down for the ride, but a lot of people make an all day event out of it:

(34,111 posts)To early to eat because it is too hot to finish my chores. I figure I will sit out with the goats and drink some wine, he won't have that pleasure either. Later I will cook up some pasta. He may get pasta but it won't be homemade and his sauce will not come from home canned tomatoes either. I like this game. Earlier when I was headed for something I was afraid would be unpleasant I pictured him standing in line in his big boy pants and socks being given his clothes, sheets, shower shoes etc. Made my life seem like the life of a queen. As I said, I like this game.

(22,037 posts)I've found it gives me some comfort to know that these criminals are all soaked with flop sweat. Among others, I find satisfaction that Cohen, Flynn, Manafort, Don Jr., Jared, Ivanka, Gates and especially Trump are increasingly worried that they will be exposed.
To know that Manafort will probably never leave jail gives me a sense that there is still a balance in the world. To know that Trump is lying awake at night trying to come up with yet another lie to explain away his criminality helps me to sleep well. To know that Cohen is bleeding money on his lawyers shows me that ill-gotten gains won't last.
I'm sitting outside, too, in the Catskill mountains. Our country is beautiful, abundant and still full of such magnificent potential. I love our nation and a great many of its people. I hope our Constitution will hold and the wrong-doers will be exposed and punished for their acts against this wonderful republic.

(22,037 posts)Is that a clarinet or a soprano saxophone?
Inquiring musical minds want to know!
Enjoy the fresh air.
You actually got it! It is a clarinet but certainly could be a soprano sax!
I am a clarinet player, have been my whole life. Stricktly symphonic with occasional pit. Still gigging although for the last 10 years it is mostly orchestra.
You?
PJMcK
(22,037 posts)Most of my work has been in music publishing, arranging/orchestrating and recording on Broadway and films/TV with some Classical. Late in my career, I've taken to playing piano for a NYC ballet school; I should have done this decades ago but, you know...
I studied at Manhattan School of Music and received BMus and MMus degrees studying with John Corigliano. Have you ever heard his clarinet concerto? It was commissioned by the NY Philharmonic and Leonard Bernstein conducted its premiere performances with Stanley Drucker as soloist. It's among my favorite of his works. Here's a YouTube performance of the MSU Orchestra with Guy Yehuda on clarinet conducted by Kevin Noe that is quite effective and musical:
I hope you'll enjoy it. Mr. Corigliano's father was the principal violinist for the NY Philharmonic for several decades and the second movement is a tribute to that relationship and features a hauntingly beautiful duet between the first violinist and the clarinet soloist. It's rather poignant that Maestro Bernstein was the Music Director for many of the years Corigliano senior was with the orhchestra.

(34,111 posts)I have not heard the clarinet concerto but I will listen when I get to a place tonight I can actually listen to it well. I fell in love with his Symphony No. 1. I was driving somewhere and when I heard it for the first time and I had to pull my car over to listen and actually weep. That had happened to me only once before listening to Prokofiev. I lost a brother to AIDS but I don't know the date of his concerto so I don't remember if that was part of my reaction. It is at turns so funny and charming and absolutely gut wrenching. Thank you for this and we should talk. I am smitten with Broadway. Just saw a touring company of The King And I the other day. I have played a few but not nearly as many as I would like. My brother directed many shows in and around Houston but he loved accompanying opera works and working with singers. I bet doing the ballet is a blast. Thank you! I will send you a PM after I listen. I am drawing a blank on the name but I once met and had a rousing week of conversations with one of the clarinet players who did Met Opera and Ballet. Ben something.....Amato?

(5,810 posts)Going to jail (a local lock up) probably was not on his agenda but then, I imagine his lawyers had warned him to bring a toothbrush when he left home this morning.
It has crossed my mind that he is not in your typical cell, overrun with cockroaches and a bunk mate named Brutus. So it could be that they have a cell for VIPs that we wont see or hear about. But just for grins and giggles, it is fun to imagine him swatting cockroaches, wondering what the sticky stuff is on the floor and trying to figure out where to hang his custom made suit.
