Lawyers for the embattled former attorney to President Donald Trump have been granted an extra ten days to review documents seized from his home and his office by federal investigators, reports Bloomberg.
The attorneys for Michael Cohen, who will reportedly be stepping down as Cohens legal counsel following the review of the documents, have been hard-pressed to go through the more than 292,000 contested items and more than 1 million items not designated privileged or highly personal by June 15.
According to the report, Barbara Jones, the retired judge selected to oversee the document review process, submitted a recommendation to the judge overseeing the case, setting a new deadline of June 25.
Jones cited the substantial progress and diligent effort of Cohens team and other lawyers in the case in her recommendation.

Correct, gratuitous; the board is yours.

(3,344 posts)How goddamned disgusting. The judge should have stuck with the taint team and not gone through this fucking nonsense. Now we have ten more fucking days for Trump and Cohen to screw around and plan their schemes.
I'm sick of these judges.

(7,633 posts)Cohen is screwed and will be in ten days. If anything, it will make him burn through even more cash for his legal team. Also, they won't be able to appeal and complain they weren't given enough time to prepare the defense.

(12,344 posts)and expect a new lawyer to pick up exactly where they left off. So they probably agreed to finish this part while he looks for a new lawyer.

(22,037 posts)Michael Avenatti made this interesting point about the cost of Cohen's legal representation. This was during a rare television appearance (wink) by Mr. Avenatti on MSNBC but it's an intriguing point. Cohen's legal bills are astronomical and may be a factor in his decisions about his future.
Consider the math and I'm going to be conservative. According to press reports, there are 15 lawyers working on the review of Cohen's documents and they are working "around the clock." Let's remove all hyperbole and consider this as regular business.
1 lawyer @ $750/hour times 40 hours per week = $30,000.
Times 4 weeks per month = $120,000.
Times 15 lawyers = $1,800,00 per month!
In fact, it's probably more given the cost of lawyers in New York City.
This is money that Cohen will never see again. And it really doesn't give him much legal strength since the special master has adjudicated that only a very small percentage of all of the materials seized by the FBI fall under the protection of attorney/client privilege.
Because of his legal problems, even if he is acquitted at trial, his legal career is probably over. He is in a very dark and dangerous place, especially if he is feeling abandoned by his "good buddy."
Like most people, I've faced existential decision points in my life. But those moments were never like those facing Cohen and, for that matter, Manafort.
Importantly, I don't think Trump is going to help Cohen with his legal bills.
