The dash cam was mounted just below the police cruisers roof, in perfect position to capture the 26-year patrolmans transformation from concerned father to authority-abusing police officer.
On that day in April, John Kovachs 18-year-old daughter, Katlyn, was dating an 18-year-old her parents didnt approve of named Makai Coleman.
She wasnt responding to her fathers attempts to talk, so Kovach tracked his daughters computer to a friends house on West 34th Street in Lorain, Ohio, he told investigators. Then he sat in his patrol cruiser, waiting.
When Colemans silver Pontiac drove past, Kovach flipped on his flashing lights and initiated the traffic stop that would end his two decades with the Lorain Police Department.
You can get out, the officer told Coleman, according to a profanity-filled video of the interaction. Youre going to jail.
When Coleman asked why, his girlfriends dad told him: Have a seat in my car. Well make [expletive] up while we go.

Headline is badly written. It makes it sound as if the cop fired his gun. It would be so simple to use a colon character instead of comma. The comma indicates a sequence. A colon would indicate a reason for being fired.

I can understand the concerned father part, hes worried and concerned about his daughter, but hes abusing his authority as a police officer.
Glad he was fired, very poor judgement, not to mention unethical and bullying.

I can totally understand that concern.

It sounds like hes worried about his daughters mental health, he says she told him she wanted to kill herself. Its not clear that the episode only happened because shes dating a black man. I think as a father hes over the top, and as a cop hes horrible.

From the OP article -
But Kovachs dealings with his daughter and her boyfriend were not the only issues that investigators say violated department policy that day.
The officer also got into it with Gloria Morales, whose children were riding in Colemans car when John Kovach pulled it over. The officer asked to search her home for his daughter and accused Morales of hiding the teen. Morales accused him of abusing his authority to deal with family strife and using department time and resources to bully people into cooperating.
Youre obstructing me, he warned her in return. This is your last warning. When she walked away, threatening to call his superiors, he gave another warning: If you call 911, youre going to jail.
In the end, Kovach managed to get his daughter, who had been hiding in the Pontiac, into the back of his cruiser. She cursed and shrieked at him, telling him that what he was doing was illegal and that he couldnt detain her without cause. But Morales made good on her threat to call 911. Another officer arrived at the scene, and the department began to take a harder look at Kovachs actions that night and his inattention to actual police matters.

Notably for the bolded part, according to some DUers, no matter how illegal or absurd, you are to "comply" with rogue cops and you are in the "wrong" if you don't. Of course "non-compliance" can become a death sentence as one can be summarily judged and executed on the spot.
