SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY (KRON) -- A video of a woman verbally attacking a Latino man and his mother for being Mexican has gone viral. In the video, a woman goes on an anti-immigrant rant using racial slurs and even sticks her middle finger in Esteban Guzman's face. Guzman, a U.S. citizen born and raised in California, says he and his mother were working in a yard in Running Springs when a woman started yelling insults toward them. She calls them "rapists" and "animals."
"Why do you hate us," Guzman asks the woman.
"Because you're Mexicans," she replies in the video. The woman also said, "even the President of the United States says you're a rapist."
Guzman talked with CNN after the video went viral saying he won't let the woman deter him from standing up for himself, his mother and the people that "don't have a voice in this country. "

A friend, Esteban Guzman sent me this video of a racist white woman harassing him while out working with his mom.
"Why do you hate us?"
"Because you're Mexicans."
"We are honest people right here!"
"Haha..yeah.. rapists & animals."

Civility indeed

(4,723 posts)This isn't uncivil because he isn't a Republican being asked to leave a restaurant. Trumpland logic.
Trump and co have enabled this kind of disgusting behavior and have made it clear that Dems are to stand aside and let it happen or are being uncivil. Bullcrap.

Guzman worked five weekdays as a systems administrator outside Los Angeles, he said, then commuted every weekend to Lake Arrowhead to help with the family cleaning, landscaping and construction business around the mountainous area.
<...>
His mother actually is from Mexico, he said. She is still a Mexican citizen, 27 years after giving birth to him in Southern California. My mom is illegal, Guzman told The Post. She doesnt have a work permit. She doesnt have any documentation.
He declined to give her name but said she had spent the past three decades in the United States, raising him and his brother as a single parent, cleaning other peoples properties so that he could go to college California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, class of 2017, he said. And now, in 2018, a woman Guzman had never seen before was telling his mother to go back to Mexico over the issue of pine needles.

I.e., his mother came here for a better life and had a child who ultimately went to college and had a steady job in a STEM field, but who also continued to do side work to help the family. The very thing they claim people are "supposed to do". Yet apparently that doesn't apply to POC.

(905 posts)If this Mexican man (per her words) was such an awful person, rapist, murder and thief then a person who is a murder or rapist would not have just stood there. I guess my point is that obviously he is none of those things and she walked away unscathed.
She was not in fear of him and felt empowered to yell her racist crap.
BumRushDaShow
(129,608 posts)and I think based on the article I linked to, that knowing he wasn't any of the horrid things she proclaimed, he also made a conscious decision not to make an extra fuss in response, allowing her to continue to spew her bullshit (and knowing this, his mother was trying to just wrap things up and leave).
Knowing the history of this country, the minute that he might have decided to become just a bit aggressive, it would have been the end for him and is mother. The woman was emboldened because she is "protected by (white) society". She has a special kind of white privilege because if she feels "threatened", either physically, emotionally, or all made up in her mind, her husband/brother/son/uncle/white male neighbor will protect her. I.e., she can do this -

(22,976 posts)This is Trump's America, and this is how we're perceived around the world-- as the biggest, dumbest, meanest assholes on the planet. Congratulations, Trumputniks, you've done a heckuva job in destroying our democracy. Good thing we're pals with Kim and Pootie now, so not only do we have good friends, we now have **the best** crooks on our team! MAGA!
Man, if I were younger, I'd be getting the hell outta Dodge right now, heading to Vancouver or Sydney or Christchurch. But I'll be 70 next year, and I'm so enraged at Republicans and the far-right, that what I want to really say is unprintable.
But I'll stick it out and give these right-wing bastards hell every day, until the last day, which I hope isn't for a long while yet.

(129,608 posts)is that the rest of the world is generally like this too. The difference being that the U.S. hypocritically claims that we "welcome all" and we are not as "homogeneous" as the countries in the rest of the world, that homogeneity being what usually stokes "nationalism".
What has set us apart as being "different" however, are the laws and the courts that attempt to enforce "equality of all" (regardless of race, ethnicity, previous nationality, gender, etc). However that whole route is being slowly broken down by the current administration in order to promote (Euro-derived) nationalism.

(129,608 posts)is the fact that Guzman's mother is undocumentated (per my post #9 here - https://www.democraticunderground.com/100210794353#post9) and they would probably find her and deport her in a hot minute.

(129,608 posts)is that since this country is actually ethnically/racially heterogeneous, what would have normally been "inter-ethnic strife" within racial groups (micro-level), ends up being "racial strife" between numerous ethnicities of one racial group vs numerous ethnicities of another (macro-level).
I.e., in Europe you saw Irish vs English or French vs Germans, and in Africa, we saw Tutsis vs Hutus or Ethiopians vs Eritreans, or in Asia the Japanese vs Koreans or Vietnamese vs Cambodians, etc.

(3,635 posts)as the world now gets to see what PoC deal with on a daily basis.
What drives white populism in all its flavors left and right, is white entitlement, the idea that the world belongs to them economically, culturally and otherwise - and there are all of these uninvited darkies contaminating their perfect world.
This guy was born here but his brown skin means he'll never be a "true American" in the eyes of many whites... same sentiment against Obama that drove the birther movement which Trump rode to power.
BumRushDaShow
(129,608 posts)that the vast majority of POC (blacks, Mexicans, Native Americans) have ancestors who were here well before the ancestors of these whites yelling the epithets and insisting that this is "their country" while demanding that POC "go back to <fill in the blank>".
I.e, Ellis Island and other ports along the east coast, are estimated to have processed some 40% of the current U.S. population (predominately Europeans), and that "formal" processing was done well after the Civil War, and included those Europeans fleeing the horrors of WWI & WWII. Drumpf's grandfather came here in 1885 and his mother came here in 1930.
radius777
(3,635 posts)and most Europeans who came here didn't come here perfectly legally either... they act like they stepped off the Mayflower with a lawyer carrying impeccable paperwork and fulfilling all requirements, ready to 'add value' to an America that welcomed them with open arms.
The fact is, European immigrants were the 'Mexicans' of the Industrial Era... they were poor laborers mostly, and there were nativist movements that saw them as subhuman as well. WASPS didn't want Catholics, Irish/Italian were considered non-white, etc. JFK himself faced alot of discrimination, questions about his allegiance to the Pope, etc. The xtian fundies really raked him over the coals.

This was before the "Civil War/Lincoln Republican Party". It was the "Republican Party" that we are seeing today, a few decades before the Civil War.
But since they don't teach this in the primary or secondary schools (although it would be part of college history courses), all of this history is forgotten and amnesia sets in. The culmination of the anti-Catholic sentiment shown in the above lead to one of the reasons why JFK and RFK were assassinated, yet you have a generation of of turncoats like the Irish Catholic Pat Buchanan who have become "Nativist".
Of course at one time, what is now Texas WAS a part of Mexico, so when the U.S. won a war and took over that land right around the same time as Irish were being attacked up here (1840s), it's ludicrous for people to keep wondering why "all those Mexicans" are there.
