Women aren't going back to back alley, clothes hanger abortions. POC arent going to put up with
Jim Crow laws. Immigrants arent leaving the country. LGBTQ aren't going back into the closet. We aren't going let our educational institutions just teach about Noah's Ark and Adam and Eve. We won't stand by as the environment becomes similar to China's.
The demographics of the nation have changed too much. you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.
If anything, we should worry about the other side... when they realize that, despite Trump's best efforts, we aren't returning to the 1950s model.
We just have redouble our efforts, work hard for November.

(17,862 posts)Even with Roe v. Wade it is almost that way right now. I wouldn't be surprised if they criminalized minors crossing state lines for an abortion even with parental consent.

(17,862 posts)The 20 state estimate looks about right when you look at the ridiculous laws that continue to get passed and, in some cases, upheld. Will a simple outlawing of the procedure be any more difficult? I know how Iowa is going to vote. We have the Fetal Heartbeat law.

Well, don't bother me now. I did what I could. I got arrested. I went to court. I endured the heckling. Now it's your turn."

(9,353 posts)There are pictures of women in western dress who were pretty much free and able to walk the streets and go to college. They were educated and sophisticated.
It was not that long ago.

(8,048 posts)on earth, in terms of women's rights and universal suffrage. The Weimar constitution was packed with safeguards for individual rights. Berlin was at the forefront of the cultural avant-garde, and Jews were integrally involved in the political, cultural, scientific and intellectual culture of Germany.
That ended faster than almost anyone could have anticipated.
It CAN happen here. The midterms may be our last, best chance to stop it.

(9,353 posts)The first time I visited, about 18 years ago, women were able to go around in tight jeans with no head covering. They could walk around unaccompanied and not be harassed.
When I went back several years later suddenly they were wearing head scarves and modest dress.
Now,with Erdogan, it is infinitely more restricted and controlled. He, essentially, just made himself dictator with the recent vote.
This is all within 18 years.

(52,205 posts)*long* term, this is a good trend.
but in the short term, they will do *anything* to keep the social hierarchy of white christian straight men on top. they are shutting down democracy and the rule of law in order to impose their outdated vision.
make no mistake, countries can go on for *decades* with a stubborn minority keeping power and keeping a majority down. look at south africa. the white minority controlled things for decades. *eventually* they transitioned to something that made more sense and was consistent with the demographics, but things were horribly wrong for a long, long time.
other places blow up more spectacularly as the disgruntled faction clinging to power tries desperately to overcome the inevitable demographic changes.
it's not at all clear america will just calmly dismiss this bigot backlash and return to normalcy and progress. at least, it's not at all clear what disasters will happen before we get to that point.

(10,015 posts)There is already talk in some states of changing the way Senators are elected back to when America was great prior to 1913 and the 17th amendment. Then state legislators got to choose.
Voter disenfranchisement is here to stay for the time being.
Unions are being stripped of power, including political, that they had...while citizens united allows the free flow of unlimited money from a few to influence everyone.
The downfall of once great countries/civilizations is not new. It happens. I am surprised, however, that a reality TV D-list host might very well bring down the USA as we know it.

(1,819 posts)But what's troublesome is the rights of individuals can erode and draconian laws and policy can cause a great deal of misery. We have already been seeing this with the immigration policy and the SC upheld the Travel ban. Next could be LGBT and women's rights.
And many voted against their own interest and their own values simply because they were afraid of change or people that were different from them and many others didn't bother to vote or voted 3rd party. Now they have the opportunity to change that in November and I think many will. But unfortunately SC appointments are for life and the rippling effects of this may last my life and impact my teen daughter who is gay. It's really sad to think about.

(31,261 posts)We just have to start pounding the voting booth. The right and far right maxed out their vote in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, while a lot of our vote sat doing nothing. If we vote smartly, we win easily.
Democrats have gotten more votes in every election since 2004, what we need to do is vote in local, state and national elections regularly so that we can change voting rights laws, gerrymandering, ect. If we vote, we win.

(50,269 posts)It doesn't matter if demographics have changed. It doesn't matter if every pro-choice person goes to the polls. If Trump appoints a far right, anti-abortion judge, that's the end of Roe. Democrats have to figure out a way to block the nomination. Can one Senator put a hold on it and stop it like they can a bill? I don't know. Democrats have to play hard ball and they have to be willing to get down and dirty. It might be necessary to try to stop a nomination until the next presidential election. Seriously. This is a disaster.

Stolen 200 election, 09/11/2001, the Iraq fiasco, the great recession, the Great Russian heist of 2016, etc, et etc. Nothing changes. What do these narcissistic pricks need to have happen, for them to get off their stupid asses and get involved? In the end what will fuck this country for good is the endless supply of apathy from a staggering portion of our citizenry. Yeah, yeah "The sky isn't falling" and all that. But it sure as shit is not nothing and we put ourselves here. One damn election is a tiny, tiny piece of what needs to be done. But most don't even know how many justices in the Supreme Court or who or what is a senator, representative and what have you.

(1,663 posts)Your positivity! It is absolutely needed. Thank you so much for this.
But we do need to echo the other side, just a bit in this moment. Complacency, among other more nefarious factors in 2016, helped to get us in this situation. Not enough people GOTV and now we are stuck in this........ worst episode of "Black Mirror"? The time to get to work has been here for more than a minute, now. A little panic/despair (pick your motivator) may be good to get a few more folks off the sidelines.
Apartheid was held in place by a small number of folks for a long time because of the concentration of power. We've been seeing the slow backhanded slip of power from the "we" to the few "me" for years now. The slippage has already begun in places that have "city managers" overruling the local elected officials, the Citizen's United ruling, and we all know about the effects of gerrymandering and voter role purging.
Yes, the numbers are on our side. Thing is, they have been on our side in many places for a while. Nearly half of Mississippi's state legislature should look completely different. Congress should have been majority female decades ago. Don't even get me started on the fact that we've never had a female president.
So yes, you are correct. We should not be ripping out our hair and wearing sackcloth, yet..... but, a moment of outcry may be helpful for some in a time such as this.
By the way, I'm with you. Redouble our efforts and work hard.....the perfect prescription.

(37,748 posts)Though I have zero data to support this, my belief (faith? guess?) is that we're witnessing the Swan Song of the Sixth Party System ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_Party_System ).
The GOP is positioned at this time as the Democrats were in '47-'48-- a crossroads when the Democratic machine had the choice of either incorporating the extremists or denouncing, and then kicking them out of the party (who then went on to become the Dixiecrats who themselves were assimilated by the southern branch of the GOP).
But at the end of the day, we get out the vote, we campaign for our candidates, we contribute where and when we can, we struggle to make our voices heard, and we hold them accountable. Anything more is beyond our ken.

(4,192 posts)then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
The ignore phase and laugh-at phase have passed. Now they fight us. Stupid fucks don't even know what's coming their way. They fight for control, we fight for freedom... for our lives, our heritages, our values of peace and freedom. Stupid fuck republicans don't know what freedom really is as evidenced by their form of governance which is always repressive, controlling and only benefits very few people. Corruption flourishes under republican rule. Democrats aren't saints but we aren't under the illusion that our birth place, skin color or income level somehow bestow some sort of superiority upon us. No, republicans are truly dumbfucks and will reap exactly what they sow. They fail to learn the right lessons from history and will pay the price. They are a vortex of stupidity. We on the left are clear that we are all in this together and there's no escaping that. Our failure is in not figuring out how to keep the greedy, selfish low-lifes from the halls of power. Our answer to that was to build a robust, accessible higher learning educational system. Isn't it interesting how republicans and conservatives saw that as a threat and have done everything in their power to dismantle public education. They prefer rules over the freedom of the human spirit. Stupid dumbfuck republicans have no idea the hell hole they are digging but I'm sure it will fit them perfectly.
