@CitizenCohn
Susan Collins saying it was a mistake not to consider Garland and that it would be a mistake for Democrats to do same to Trump's next nominee tells you everything you need to know about how the GOP gets away with breaking all the rules.

Susan Collins seems to be chairing the Tsk Tsk Caucus. Or maybe it's co-chaired by Jeff Flake.

(9,527 posts)The way out of a descending cycle isn't to continue it.
The best longer term solution is to create more legal restrictions. If instead of the undefined advise and consent on judicial nominees, the law was vote on the nominee x number of days after the nomination is made the Republicans would've had to deal with Garland. Instead of an undefined emoluments clause, we spelled it out. Etc.

(82,849 posts)Are they in the works? Who is putting this together right now in time for the next Supreme Court nominee or any pending claims that the president is in violation of the Emoluments Clause?
Because if those restrictions aren't in place, right now and iron-clad, we have to work with the system that exists now. It would be lovely to have anti-gravity brakes that will stop a car after it's plunged off a cliff, but since those aren't a thing, we should probably hit the brakes now, on this side of the precipice, though it may already be too late for that.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A moderate Republican senator heaped praise on President Barack Obamas U.S. Supreme Court nominee on Tuesday, bucking Senate Republican leaders who promptly dismissed her call for confirmation hearings.
Susan Collins of Maine became only the second Republican senator to meet with Merrick Garland since Obama nominated the centrist appellate judge last month to fill the court vacancy left by the Feb. 13 death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
The hourlong meeting came as Republican senators face mounting pressure from conservative activists to go along with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnells plan to block any nominee chosen by Obama.
The meeting left me more convinced than ever that the process should proceed. The next step, in my view, should be public hearings before the Judiciary Committee, Collins told reporters.

WE fight - Get used to it- Kick em out of restaurants, get in their faces. Protest, March. Sit ins. Phone Calls. And yes Vote. Alll of it. This is what fighting looks like. Stall. These folks don't play nice. Why the hell are we talking about playing nice? Our democracy is at stake. We are talking about issues that are going to affect generations. Our country is changing under these scumbags.
