Why I Left Judge Barrett's "People of Praise (POP) Church" - Some Women Called HANDMAIDSLast edited Tue Jul 3, 2018, 10:57 PM - Edit history (2)
The following are some 1st person insights into the spin off faction of Catholism that SCOTUS nominee Barret belongs to. This is an extremely patriarchal faction.
The man who wrote this listed 3 reasons why. This is reason #3 found at this link http://covenantcommunities.blogspot.com/2007/03/leaving-people-of-praise.html 3. Life in POP was becoming increasingly burdensome to Marie, who could not accept what she saw going on. But to give it one last try, she submitted to counseling from a "Handmaid". This woman (who had no formal training or qualifications) gave Marie advice that I recognized to be counter to sound spiritual teaching and to the express teaching of the great masters of Catholic spiritual advice. But, I figured, this isn't a big problem. I could just let our coordinator know so that he could correct the Handmaid. I was not prepared for his response. He said the problem was not with the Handmaid, but with Marie, who was subverting God's plan for her life, throwing up theological smokescreens. My job as her husband and head was to call her on it and bring her back into submission. People are free to believe what they want. All for that. However, extremism in any form cannot be allowed to sit in the HIGHEST COURT OF THE COUNTRY. 🙄🙄🙄Handmaid?🙄🙄🙄 OhNo-Really? I watched two parts of THE HANDMAIDENS TALE - Totally disgusting in every way!

1. this "woman" undoubtedly will be a front-runner because he thinks Dems won't
fight against a woman. We need to be prepared to hit the phones HARD if she is the selection.

4. This isn't ANY form of Catholicism. She can call herself whatever she wants,
but People of Praise isn't Catholic dogma, anymore than Mel Gibson's personal offshoot church is.

7. What I am hearing is an insulted Catholic.
I understand what you mean; however, the POP think of themselves as more enlightened
I was raised Catholic and believe you me, my mom ruled our roost. I have given these extremist groups a great deal of thought. Imho, the self-designated leaders are jeolous of God. They want the loyalty, control. and adherence instead of the God they pretend to represent. This childish, selfish need to be " more special" to God and others than that unworthy guy down the street is a dangerous tendency. And. the sheep that he convinces to follow his "new, better" path also want to feel special and smart and special. We are in such a fubarred state today. NO WAY IN HEAVEN OR HELL can a religious zealot assume power over governance. Between the religious zealots, trumpinators, and the Aryan Brotherhood types, MS-13 is an almost invisible mosquito. |

10. You are hearing someone who acknowledges that the Catholic Church
has its flaws, but it also has a particular set of dogma.
People of Praise has its own. Just because she or anyone else calls themselves Catholic ,or were raised Catholic, doesn't mean that People of Praise has anything to do with the official Catholic church. I agree with your characterization of these religious zealots. |

12. Yet, they go to Rome. They want the association with the Church
but the freedom to rule their own little fiefdoms under the guise of the church. Disguised apostates in a sense. No wonder people are confused. These parasites feed off of parishners fears, insecurities, and doctrinal ignorance who seem eager to put their hand into the hand of man instead of into the hand of the God they seek to serve.
It's a cult or, at the very least, very cultish. A person graced with full faith in God, His Plan, and directives to Love All doesn't really need an organized religion, imo, although fellowship can be wonderful and group can do a lot of good. |

14. According to their website, they are an ecumenical group.
https://peopleofpraise.org/about/who-we-are/
We are an ecumenical, charismatic, covenant community. Our model and inspiration is the first Christian community, a small band of disciples who “were of one heart and soul” and “held all things in common.” (Acts 4:33, 2:44). We can be difficult for the public and the press to understand. In truth, we are a community that defies categories. Take our ecumenism. A majority of People of Praise members are Catholic, and yet the People of Praise is not a Catholic group. We aim to be a witness to the unity Jesus desires for all his followers. Our membership includes not only Catholics but Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists, Pentecostals and nondenominational Christians. What we share is a common baptism, a commitment to love one another and our teachings, which we hold in common. |

15. Here is reason #2 The author left Judge Barrets religious affiliation
From the article:
2. At this time (early 1980s) I was working for the conference department of the POP's outreach, Charismatic Renewal Services (CRS). Since we were into renewal of the Church, I thought I ought to read the Documents of Vatican II.

I just started the audio book. She talks about her child being taken from her which gave me a cold chill with the parallels occurring today. But thanks for a the heads up. I may prefer to skip the tv series.

19. An article in Slate said the group took the term "handmaids" from a bible verse
about Mary , years before the Handmaids' Tale came out. The group no longer uses the term ,changed it to Women's Leader or something. They're still creepy, though.
