Trump a racist? Half of Americans in poll say yes

Americans are evenly divided over whether President Donald Trump is a racist, and strongly disagree with separating children from their immigrant parents, according to a new Quinnipiac University national poll.

The poll found that 49 percent believe that the 45th president is racist, while 47 percent felt that he is not. Forty-four percent of white voters felt he is racist, along with 78 percent of African Americans and 58 percent of Latinos.

The poll, taken June 27-July 1, gave a 58-39 percent thumbs-down to how Trump is handling immigration policy. By a 60-36 percent margin, those surveyed agreed that separating parents from children is a violation of human rights.

"When it comes to separation of immigrant kids from their parents, American voters are clearly appalled," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Overall, 40 percent of those surveyed approved of the job Trump is doing, with 55 percent disapproving. The debate over Trump's "Zero Tolerance" immigration policy has resulted in a slight downturn. A Quinnipiac poll in June registered 52-43 percent disapproval.
