It used to be that sane and intelligent Missourians were grateful for Kansas. Despite the heated sports rivalry, despite the jokes, deep in our hearts Missourians were grateful for Kansas, for the simple fact that compared to the crazy shit going on in Kansas, Missouri looked pretty normal.
No more, tomorrow Missourians are set to vote on Amendment 2, a proposed Constitutional amendment also known as the "Right to Pray" amendment. Not only does this amendment reaffirm students' right to pray at school, but it will also give students the right to refuse to learn lessons that offend their religious sensibilities. That's right, if a student doesn't like learning about evolution, science, or frankly any lesson, they can claim religious exemption. Here is more on the amendment, if you care to find out.
What this means is endless lawsuits, endless parental interference in the classroom, endless students dreaming up ways to get out of studying, and the simple fact that Missouri students are now going to rank even lower than ever in their education. This is going to make my job, and the job of all teachers in this state that much harder.
Worse yet, Missouri is going to pass Kansas on the religious idiocy level.
I grieve for my state.

(53,415 posts)The Bible sets pi as 3 instead of the irrational number it is. I don't recall the exact place but a circular part of a temple is described as having a circumference of 21 cubits and a diameter of 7 cubits which would make pi 3.

(5,756 posts)Should be interesting to see how tests that so many RW corporations are making bank off of might be affected. Does MO have any state-wide standards students are supposed to achieve before they can graduate? The RW corporations pushed all that testing and the standards so they could make millions and millions off the testing and scoring.
Will students actually be able to opt out of enough of the curriculum to impact the profits of the testing companies? School districts won't want to keep using all those tests if the tests start to show they're cranking out ignorant graduates. So then there will be requests for waivers to stop the testing I'd think.
Seems like a lose-lose. Students lose because they graduate ignorant of important lessons and the for-profit "education" corporations lose revenue.
