My parents had friends with those tattoos. I asked about them once. Only once.

It was in a bookstore in Adelaide, South Australia. The bookstore had small sections devoted to books written in several European languages. One section was "Polish." An elderly, rather short, gentleman was reaching for a book from the top shelf in that section. He pulled out the book, but the book next to it fell on the floor. I picked it up and asked "Do you wish to look at this book, Sir?". He said he did not and I replaced the book on the shelf.

Why "Sir"? Because, when he was stretching for that book, his wrist became exposed and I could see see his tattoo. I knew that that gentleman had seen and experienced things worse than my worst nightmares.
