Roe v Wade is a goose that lays electoral golden eggs for the pukes. They want to use it to win battles for corporate interests against the federal government.
Deciding to overturn will create a nightmare scenario in states that ban abortions.

(9,650 posts)In many areas you can legally get an abortion but there are no clinics that will provide them.
That effectively destroys Roe.

(79,050 posts)Anyone who thinks it's "safe" needs to pull their head out of the sand, and take note of that. Thank you.
The republicans want to put it to the state level. And it goes beyond abortion rights. They want to control what type of birth control people use, and on and on.

(9,650 posts)Will never forget my Gyno in 1967 in NYC telling me that he could no longer give me a prescription for BC pills because I was not married. He had had no problem for the previous year but suddenly found god when his catholic hospital changed the rules.
This may come back. Would not be surprised.

(79,050 posts)those of our generation remember those days all too well. And those are the very rights that these sick people -- and they are sick -- want to roll back.
Thank you for providing this personal experience.

I am sick over this as I have 2 daughters and 3 granddaughters. And I don't think Trump is rational and what does he care, anyway?

(11,203 posts)To allow for hormonal contraception prescriptions (like the infant formula manufacturers did).
If there is $$$$ to be made for a policy decision he really cares little about, he will take the $$$$ (unless he thinks it would upset his base too much).

(58,785 posts)Experts says the Heritage Foundation is committed to overturning Roe. Every name on their list is of a strong conservative who will use "originalist" arguments to move our governments strongly right.
Dishonest because the constitution that the real "originals" finally ratified after months of passionate argument was some pages that could be folded into a man's coat pocket. They were almost all attorneys who intended it to be interpreted by the courts in the context of real-world situations. Originalism over 225 years later in a very different world is a sure sign of dishonest conservatives determined to impose what the people will not vote.

(6,642 posts)...it has nothing to do with what Republican politicians want
Roe is definitely in danger of being restricted or overturned if a conservative judge is added

(37,953 posts)People, if a government does not respect your basic human rights...it is NOT worthy of your support.
One of shitbag, revenue sucking, inbred infested red states is going to pass a total abortion ban to get it to the SCOTUS within weeks after confirmation.
The best way to deal with these fuckers is stop the transfer of wealth to these states. A Transfer Payment Equalization Act.

(463 posts)As far as gay marriage, if they throw that back to the states, they will see protests like they could not imagine. Two-thirds of the country supports same-sex marriage. And the LGBT community is not one to be idly fucked with. We're an irascible lot to begin with. There would be riots, I think.
With Roe, I don't think they'll ever be so overt. I think they'll simply chip away and chip away, allowing various restrictions until abortion becomes becomes so difficult to access in some states, that Roe will be repealed in all but name in those places. They'll leave the case itself alone, but they'll try to be somewhat subtle about it.
Vox just released an article with the latest polls on Roe:
https://www.vox.com/2018/7/9/17525410/polls-abortion-roe-v-wade-supreme-court
I know what you may be thinking (I am, too), "Since when do Republicans care about polls?"
But, if they think Roe or marriage equality are going down without a complete firestorm from the Left and Independents, they're out of their minds. Republicans, if anything, are politically astute. That's why they've amassed so much power. By the time these cases reach the new court, support will only increase for these issues.
I think, if women, the men who love them, and LGBTers and their family and friends signal enough, the Court will think twice.
Or not. I'm cynical enough to know that nothing the right-wing does will surprise me.

(55,137 posts)Johnson signed the civil rigjts laws and said, "We just lost the southern vote for the next 40 years" and he was right. I am thinking the same with the SCOTUS pick and women/abortion/birth control as well as LGBT marriage rights and taking the ACA away from dying people while bankrupting them will will take votes away from the GOP for 40 more years. They are digging their own graves.

(7,794 posts)But I think they don't care one way or another because they will always find a way for themselves should the need arise. With this pick they will have their SCOTUS majority, and their gerrymandered districts to keep themselves in power for a while. It's going to take some rude awakening for those who have voted against their interests, a spirited youth movement, and an invigoration of the citizens who have stopped or never bothered to vote.
