It sounds so simple: "Saying something does not make it so".

Mexico will not pay for Trump's wall.
Trump has not provided "better cheaper health care that covers everyone".
Trump got nothing from the North Korean summit.
Putin is not "fine".
Trump is not a "very smart man".

Why do so many have so much difficulty with this concept?

I would say that tRump supporters share many character traits with him, so whenever tRump is criticized for all of the above (and more), these supporters take it personally and will refuse to believe there is anything (major) wrong with tRump's conduct.

In the Asch conformity experiments, subjects had to determine the relative length of line when compared to three other lines. The subject was in a room full of actors who consistently gave the wrong answers. Most subjects also gave wrong answers when the others did, at least sometimes. Only 25% consistently went with their own eyes rather than majority opinion.
