4. Purpose
Tue Jul 17, 2018, 12:01 AM

To insure the government could call up a military force to defend against foreign invasion and domestic uprisings. Many of the Framers were against the notion of a standing army.

It is ironic the Framers wanted to ensure the government could put down uprisings against the government using the militia. Today's asshole conservatives flip that on its head.

7. Two different questions
Tue Jul 17, 2018, 12:06 AM
Jul 2018

What WAS the purpose of the 2nd Amt?

To have a ready militia to call up (since we did not have a standing army) to defend the country.

What IS the purpose of the 2nd Amt?

To the gut totin' idjits - to "protect" themselves from government tyranny! Good luck there boys.

to fight whatever European power might invade and also to fight "domestic terrorism" from Indian tribes. The founding fathers could have never anticipated the type of guns we have now. The machine gun mechanisms created in the late 1800s/early 1900s changed modern warfare. They could have never contemplated modern handguns, or machine guns and other type of automatic weapons.

the intent of 2nd was not for automatic weapons. There is no way 2nd amendment should apply to something like ar15.

I wish that a video file of the April 10, 1981, sketch was available. It has stuck with me all these years. Here is blurb about it from Wikipedia:

. . . the US Founding Fathers worrying that the Second Amendment, "The Right to Bear Arms," will be abused in the future while ignoring suggestions for amendments granting equal rights to women and African-Americans; . . .
