Papa John Warns: Pizza Prices Will Rise Under Obamacare

Papa John Warns: Pizza Prices Will Rise Under Obamacare

During a shareholders conference call last week, "Papa" John Schnatter, founder and CEO of the pizza chain that bears his name, issued a warning to consumers that, unless Obamacare is repealed, the company's pizza prices are likely to increase.

"If Obamacare is in fact not repealed, we will find tactics to shallow out any Obamacare costs and core strategies to pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders best interests," Schnatter said, according to Politico.

A major Mitt Romney backer, Schnatter estimates pizzas under Obamacare will cost 11 to 14 cents extra, "or 15 to 20 cents per order from a corporate basis."

McDonald's addressed Obamacare concerns during its Q2 earnings call last month, but, unlike Papa John's, did not indicate that need to pass the impact onto consumers.

Tue Aug 7, 2012, 04:06 PM

I went to their site to see where it was (a good long way from me) and they have live operators that pop up in chat to answer questions. So I asked if atheists or abortion doctors could buy homes there and this is what he said:

...Ave Maria is not a Catholic community if that is what you were thinking...Ave Maria is open to every religion, ethnicity and age. In fact, we believe that the intermingling of people of different backgrounds, interests and life stages will be important to making Ave Maria a true community.

which is word for word from their faq so it seems like that is what they have to say but at least it doesn't sound quite as nefarious as depicted above.

The operator who spoke with me treated me more kindly than I treated him at first (I was being a dick and I shouldn't have been.) I ended up thanking him for his time and patience we parted ways.

147. I imagine the point is to have a planned community
Tue Aug 7, 2012, 07:00 PM
Aug 2012

there are a lot of them in Florida, (Avalon, Baldwin Park and Celebration just to name 3 I can think of off the top of my head right here in Central Florida) just not all owned by a Catholic pizza guy...I suspect they would like to see community members go to their church but I found nowhere that said it was a requirement.

I bet I'd have to buy or be seriously interested in buying enough to go down and talk to the various builders in person to see what HOA rules there were though. The site mentioned but did not specify fees for common area upkeep and services.

Look, I'm not interested in defending the Catholic church but I am willing to stick to criticizing them for shit they actually do instead of what I think they might have done or what someone else might have done with their name on his speed-dial.

I do not discount the possibility that the guy on the other end of the chat is a salesman and has to say salesman things. But the community was portrayed as some culty, stepford wives kind of place yet it seems to be not much more than a planned community that happens to be owned by a rich Catholic guy who sells crappy pizza.

But not as crappy as Papa John's.

We don't need the GingrichCare of mandated, loosely regulated, for-profit insurance that is still too expensive, only pays parts of medical bills, denies claims, bankrupts and kills people.

Individual franchisees will not be subject to any of the ACA requirements, as I can't imagine a Papa John's would employ more than 50 people. While it's true that some franchisees own multiple locations and the mandate might kick in, you're talking about something well less than a dollar per pie -- and every other pizza chain will be in the same situation, so it's not like Papa Johns will be at a strategic disadvantage (Pizza Hut and Domino's are in the same boat).

So bite me, Pizza Boy.

Tue Aug 7, 2012, 02:55 PM
Aug 2012

When one of his workers gets pregnant, has a car accident, injures him/herself on the job, breaks a leg, develop diabetes, etc., who pays for their care? The people with insurance do. The companies that do provide insurance to their employees do through higher premiums because health care providers have to charge more to make up for their losses treating Papa John's employees with no health insurance.

Schnatter wants the public to pay for his employees healthcare which would save him millions because he doesn't provide it to his employees. He's a typical corporate welfare queen.

Sorry, but I would rather pay that $.15 more for a pizza than to pay thousands more in health insurance premiums.

Tue Aug 7, 2012, 05:42 PM
Aug 2012

At 14 cents per order - not per pizza, but per order - and assuming an average order of $25, that amounts to a grand total of a fraction of 1 percent. An increase in Schnatter's pay is likely to have a greater impact on price. Or, with the drought, the price of mozzarella cheese is likely to have a greater impact.

But this guy's a republican, so we know that if he opens his mouth, he's lying.

Including the pizza.

Papa John's CEO John Schnatter says that Obamacare will result in a $0.11 to $0.14 price increase per pizza, or $0.15 to $0.20 cents per order,

First of all, if his cost goes up $0.11 to $0.14/pizza, he'll raise the price by at least a buck, and put the balance in his pocket.

Secondly, here's my recipe for pizza dough. It's easy, fun, and a great way to get everyone working in the kitchen together. Add a bottle of wine, and you're off!! This will make about 4 12" rounds with a thin crust, or a couple of standard rectangle cookie sheets. It can be halved easily.

5 cups flour
2 packets dry yeast (don't be afraid...it's easy to work with)
2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon salt
about 1 teaspoon olive oil (If you use anything but extra virgin, I will hunt you down and hurt you)

Add the yeast to the warm water with a pinch of sugar and allow to "proof" (it'll get a layer of foam...takes a few minutes). Put the flour in a large bowl, and add the water/yeast mixture. Mix it together with a fork until it gets too stiff to stir, then turn it out onto a floured board and start to knead. (Take off your rings, and keep your hands floured!) Keep flour nearby to add as needed. It starts out really "ragged" but will start to pull together after a couple of minutes. Add the salt at this point, and keep kneading. (Great therapy after a tough day!) When it's fairly soft and smooth, and "bounces back" if you press your finger into it lightly, it's ready to rise. Put a little olive oil in a bowl that's about twice the size of the ball of dough, roll the dough in it so it's coated, cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and put it in a warm place to raise for about 45 minutes. Go have a glass of wine. When it's about twice it's original size, punch it down and roll out. Lightly flour the pans, or (ideally) use a pizza stone. I don't use sauce...I cut up Italian style plum tomatoes and use them. DON"T use regular tomatoes...they're too watery. Add whatever toppings you want (don't forget oregano!), put it in a 450 oven for about 20 minutes, depending on how thick you rolled the crust. I also pre-bake the crust for about 5 minutes before adding the toppings to keep the crust from getting soggy.

I've always done it by hand, but if you have a bread machine, I'm sure it'll work just fine. I suggest you try it at least once before springing it on friends you're having over for dinner, but you'll never go back to delivery again.

Buon appetito!

I don't get it!

These guys have unquestioning faith that forces of supply and demand will always product the optimum results.

They then make statements like this basically saying that:

I can make a unilateral price increase and pass my operating cost rises on to the consumer. If he can really do this, it evidence that markets do not operate efficiently (i.e., it is not supply and demand that determines price but rather something else - at least in the short-run).

His true "warning" should be that most wealthy individuals know that the system doesn't work well in the short-run and exploiting these weaknesses in the systems allows them to accumulate massive amounts of capital.

What horror!

Is it humanly possible for rich, conservative CEO's to be bigger crybabies?

You gotta be that arrogant to think your pizza is that good. I get mine from local, small business which are not as cheap as his crap but better and more satisfying.

I agree that any locally-made pizza is way better than any mega-chain's.

There's a pizza price war going on now that has nothing to do with Obamacare. A slump in consumer spending is the main reason.

As long as one major pizza chain is willing to offer a 10 (or even 12) dollar pizza, the others will follow...regardless of Obamacare.
