That was a state law, and probably violated the state constitution (not familiar with that)...

...on the other hand, I'm sure the state party committees or even the national committees can impose restrictions on who can be their nominee in primaries or ultimately the general election. They're not prohibiting any candidates from running, just not running under their name.
